projector wanted

Postby dimairt » Wed Sep 17, 2008 7:00 pm

Does anyone have an old projector I could borrow? I acquired a pile of old films earlier this year from an exiled Glaswegian but have been unable to view them.
He wasn't able to remember much of what was on them though he's sure that he has the demolition of the Grand Hotel, some film taken from the bridge to nowhere when it was under construction as well as lots of family stuff.
He wants me to donate to the Scottish Film Archive but I'd like to have a look at myself. If anyone can help, great. I'll have a look and perhaps arrange a wee HG night.

What type of projector do you need? I have a Super 8 machine in good working order, but it's more likely that the film is Standard 8 or even 16 mm.

Colin,
There's nothing on the reels to indicate to what kind of film it is.

First of all, measure the width of the film - that'll tell you whether it's 8mm or 16mm, or some more obscure format.

If it's 8mm (common for home movies), you need to find out whether it's "standard 8" or "super 8". Look at the sprocket holes on the film. If they're aligned with the gaps between the frames, it's standard-8, if they're smaller and aligned with the centre of the frame it's super-8.

I know a bloke that transfers film to DVD and his costs are reasonable. Not sure if I'd be breaking the rules by posting his web site/contact details on the forum so if you're interested then send me a pm and I'll pass you the details. :-)

I know it may be a bit away, but there's a place on Crow Road, near Broomhill Cross that does it and on Dumbarton Road near Exeter Drive (along from Sandy Road Health centre) he quotes £10 per disk, not sure about the Crow Road one tho.
