Tech question:

On two laptops (differing makes and models but both running windows 7 64 bit) how straightforward is a hard drive swap?

Ie. take the drive from the non functioning machine, take the drive from the new machine and simply plug the old drive into the new machine.

I'm doing the due diligence v.v. research on the subject and coming up with all sorts of conflicting info.

Some say there's no way to make this work, others say Windows 7 will tolerate it and simply replace any drivers needing updating or changing automatically.

Newer chips are more power efficient as well, and tend to throttle themselves back to use less power when they're not in use, whereas older chips couldn't step down so would go at full speed all the time.

A large part of the power usage of any mobile device is the backlight for the screen. They tend to use much more efficient LEDs these days, rather than CCFLs.

As mentioned, battery technology's come a long way, and older batteries get "worn out" so won't hold as much of a charge, and will discharge quicker than they used to.

I had a printer (now broken) which I used a lot to take print-outs, then download them to Pictures, and then I would attach to emails to send to people. I can't do this now because I no longer have a printer. I am using Firefox browser.

...When I see an image I want to forward to someone, is there an easy way to send it as an attachment? If I saved the image to Bookmark, could I then attach it to an email somehow? Alternatively, could I download images to Pictures, because I am so familiar with how to continue from there?

Right click and save image as, or drag the image right out of firefox and into your destination folder.

Hi everyone hope you are all well, I am trying to secure my wireless internet connection after i had to reset my wireless router using a paper clip, its a a Dynamode br 6004 w g1wireless ap router, and i am with Virgin broadband.
normally after resetting i would go to 192.168.1.1 and just put in a new hex number (wep plus numbers and letters and change the default ssid to some thing else), but i usually do this on my pc not the laptop i have been trying to get into the above page to change the settings to secure my connection again.
all wireless appliances are fine using laptop and play station no problems.
My pc is not working at the moment that's why i am trying to change the settings with my laptop.
firefox wont find 192.168.1.1 on my laptop
chrome let me in but did not change the settings when i pressed apply seemed to timed out,
can any one suggest ways of securing my connection please.

Here's an odd one .. the new laptop (windows 64bit) refuses to see the old external hard drive)

It doesn't show in disk management, but does show up in device manager as an "unknown device" in the USB tree.

But, if I plug it into the bog standard Frankensteined desktop with its pirate copy of Wondows 7, it sees it no problem.

I had to change "ownership" of the drive via the 'properties>security' tab .. but it works fine.

Any pointers as to why the new machine won't see it?

It's probably a decent, respectable machine averting its gaze from the contents of your external hard disc.

Is it a 2.5" hard drive that's inside the caddy, or is it a 3.5" drive? If it's a 2.5", you might find that the desktop will happily give it the power it wants, while the laptop isn't quite up to it. Using it through a powered USB hub might fix the problem, or one of the Y-cables that comes with these drives that let you draw power from two USB ports.

If it's not a 2.5" drive, I'm flummoxed. Maybe an incompatibility between the USB chipset and the drive?

It's an external 3.5 drive, has its own power supply .. it works on the desktop. It worked fine on the old laptop. Just won't be recognised by the new laptop.
