A colleague worked with a guy who used to prefix every third sentence or so with this expression.

They called him Captain Midnight.

Some poncy sounding ex(?) diplomat used the word 'ventriloquise' on Newsnight yesterday in denying having put words into someone else's mouth.

I also heard a US veterinarian speak of 'euthanising' an animal. Rght up there with having your home 'burglarised'.

Too many, where to start? 'how' instead of 'why' is a personal grrrrr!! 'moreish' is it even a real word or did Kellogs or whoever just make it up? And yes, all the 'science' words that cosmetic companies make up, utter BS!!

I often use "how" instead of "why", but only in the sense of "how's that?" instead of "why's that?"

It's perfectly reasonable English where I come from!

Bifidus Digestivum - Anyone who uses those two words should be shot.

Americans using 'then' instead of 'than'. Is a biscuit better then a cake? HATE FILLED!

'fink' instead of 'think'. Just die.

'ergo'

Perfectly reasonable? Where do you come from then? 'how's that' is totally different from 'why's that', the two are not interchangeable. 'How is that possible?' is a totally different question from 'why is that possible?'.

I think the use of 'how' for 'why' comes from the short phrase 'how come' to clarify something. It's just been shortened yet further. It's fairly common in Scotland as far as I'm aware.

There's something of a habit among TV car programme hosts (especially that wanker Clarkson) to compare and test two cars 'in order to decide which is best'.
