Sorry McShad but you've been had! Not only are they not spiders but if you look at the sleeve on the right you'll see they're being held close to the lens.

Doorstop.... A word of warning here. If you should happen to descend into your basement or cellar you will undoubtedly find it full of large egg/pod type things. You must resist the temptation to lean over for a closer look whilst shining a torch on them. Look what happened to John Hurt.

ps - stay well clear of your air-conditioning vents too.

Here is an almost life size picture of the biggest spider in the world, the Goliath Tarantula. You hit this thing with a rolled up Record and it just shouts "ouch!"

There are videos on youtube but don't watch if you don't like seeing wee mice getting the malky.

Most of the spiders we get in the house are Tegenaria Duellica, commonly known as the Giant House Spider - wolf spiders live outdoors.

You'll see more Tegenaria Duellica at this time of year as the mature males start wandering around looking for a mate. It's quite common for the bigger specimens to be fairly aggressive and they will have a go at you if you threaten them.

They can live for several years and are the second fastest spiders in the world. Always good to see photos of them - the range of different colouring and markings are facinating..
