Scotch on the Rocks

Postby MacotheIsles » Sun Jul 08, 2007 12:57 pm

Anybody remember this TV series rom 1973? Was a fictional account of a 'Scottish Liberation Army' and an armed insurrection. A lot of the plot centred round Glasgow and it starred Maurice Roeves, John Cairney and Ian Cuthbertson amongst others, Don't think it's ever been shown on tv since.

I remember it. It was written by Douglas Hurd and Andrew Osmond, the same Douglas Hurd who was the Tory MP and minister in the Thatcher government.

I have my suspicions as to why it appeared when it did and why it didn't get repeated.

I also remember being very disappointed when the bridge was blown up in the last episode. I had hoped for something far more spectacular!

radar! Great stuff. Glad you remember it too.

I didn't know it was Douglas Hurd that co-authored it although I do remember it being released as a paperback just after the series.

It was obviously politically sensitive and I suppose that may be why it was never repeated. And I can well believe there was a whiff of anti-nationalist propoganda about it. 1973 was it or thereabouts?

Maurice Roeves was brilliant in it. I'd love to see it again, but probably more chance of Tutti Frutti coming back on than that.

There was another series: The Guardians, which was roughly the same time and depicted a Britain ruled by gestapo-like police under a dictatorship. That's never been seen or heard of again either - probably for the same reason. They just don't make tv programmes like they used to!

It was very 'cutting edge' at the time.

Mr Horn!

Interesting! I hadn't seen that, but it seems to confirm that it was so politically sensitive that it was binned after being shown.
