Also, according to my mum, the train to Glasgow from Carluke takes longer now than when she was at uni about 30 years ago. Some progress!

Bet the train from Carluke is more packed now than it was 30 years ago!

Not sure about that - it might have been pretty busy when there was still industry in Motherwell. Just now it has to make 12 stops from Lanark to Central, so it's usually packed. My mum doesn't drive, and she can't get to her work by bus as she'd have to change twice. The fares go up, but the service doesn't really improve much.

Lots of people in Glasgow don't have cars, and are similarly at the mercy of public transport.

An aside, I know, but here is a picture of George Square on Wednesday. I can only assume is was an event marking the opening of this thread.

These days the old hammer and sickle is not as recognisable as it once was...

That is how it feels sometimes, you know. I feel like this is a different dimension from the one I just came from... 8O

Sounds like the beginning of "28 Days Later" ::):

Does Vlad view the SSP, Socialist Labour Party, Lib Dems, Nu Labour, SNP, Solidarity or none of the above from mainstream politics as supporting his views? I am interested as I have not voted yet.

I'll be voting SNP. Not because I especially like their policies, but more because I want independence for this country. I think then we can move on without the confines of the anglo-saxon political culture.

If Socialist or Communist parties as exist elsewhere in Europe, were active here, then I would probably vote for one of them. Right now in Scotland, either parties are left-wing and crazy or right-wing, and well, right-wing...

So much for Пролетарии всех стран, соединяйтесь! Or "workers of all lands unite", as I'm sure Vlad knew.
