fossils decadent decade.the poles have a saying for a decade birthday but i cant remember for the life of me what it is.it basically relates to the fact that for each decade birthday you reach then you will live untill the next one.my polish uncle told me this at his ninetieth birthday last year.

I bought this picture in a charity shop the other day. It's a shame to see a family history discarded like this; it reminds me of a favourite poem, "Mr. and Mrs. Scotland Are Dead," by Kathleen Jamie. I've added the first verse below.

Durachdan,

Eddy

Image

On the civic amenity landfill site,
the coup, the dump beyond the cemetery
and the 30-mile-an-hour sign, her stiff
old ladies’ bags, open mouthed, spew
postcards sent from small Scots towns
in 1960: Peebles, Largs, the rock-gardens
of Carnoustie, tinted in the dirt.
Mr and Mrs Scotland, here is the hand you were dealt:
fair but cool, showery but nevertheless,
Jean asks kindly; the lovely scenery;
in careful school-room script –
The Beltane Queen was crowned today.
But Mr and Mrs Scotland are dead. -

Funny the power of "things", even things you have no direct personal connection with. I kept a hold of some of the previous, deceased, house owner gardening tools. They were obviously much used, and i dint want to lose that connection of the tools that shaped the once much loved garden. The old policemans tools. Made me feel sentimental about someone i knew nothing of; though my parents recall him as the local policeman.... a long time ago.
