I just realised, since this is easter Monday, that I have been on the net for 10 years today. Initially using a usenet reader, Mosaic and ftp, then along came the WWW. When did you first get onto the net?

I've been on the internet in its' present form for about ten years also. Before that I was on BBSs (the precursor of the internet). So all together, about fourteen years.

I was on CIX from my trusty Compy 386 since about 1990.

Man those were the days... Usenet, Gopher and... that was it!

Bit of a late developer on the net front in the year 1997bs (before spam)

Now you mention the pre-net, I was a regular on Prestel with my Sinclair Spectrum (the one with the rubber keys). You could order holiday brochures and check the weather, not much else, for a small fortune. Them were the days (not).

They were the days. Before spam, before popups, before viruses. Before shit quality took over 90% of the internet. Before the days when any pimply-arsed 13yr old could get online. Before internet paedophiles. Before morons pervaded almost all of IRC.

They were the days when pretty much everything online was of high quality. People actually put a lot of thought into what they said, did and distributed online, because they were the only ones in the know about it. It was purer.

Aye, those were the days alright. I rather miss it, sometimes.

Is PRESTEL still on the go?? We had it in work and it was dull to say the least. We also had an archaic NTn telex machine network. Think BBC football results of the late 70's early 80's and the clickety clack of a dot matrix printer and you'll get the picture.

hahaha, my dad had a Telex machine in his study before the advent of faxes. I remember it well.

I first started using BBSes in about 1988, when one of my mates started running one when he went to uni. When I left school and went to uni (RGIT as was) a couple of years later (1990-1991 session), we didn't actually have Internet access, but a purloined shell account on an Aberdeen Uni machine (an elderly Sun) led to a significant amount of poking around in JANET. I probably started to use the Internet in about '93, '94 or so, about the same time as (or a little after) I started using Linux. Prior to that I was using SCO Unix (back when SCO actually wrote software, not lawsuits) on some of the uni computers.

I had email access at my College in 95. Been online in the house for about six years now. Seems longer. I too remember the days before pop-ups, spam, viruses every hour of the day......and you try telling the kids today that.
