After WW1 Remploy of Hillington came into being and vowed never again to have ex service men playing mouth-organs on the streets of glasgow for money.
Here we see Chic Mckusker fashioning some prosthetic limbs, in the fore ground you can see the traditional Hook but its the other two that are of concern.
Perhaps he was a latter day Edward Scissor Hands?

Where and when might this photo have been taken? Is it the arms cache Sadam kept with him in his bunker? Is it a small sample from a teenage Americans arsenal?

Image

No... it's part of the collection accrued in the 1961 arms amnesty in Easterhouse! 8O

Older memebers may know the story about Wallace the Glasgow Central Fire Station (Ingram Street) Mascot.
The story go's that Wallace used to chase the Fire Carts when they were called out and to stretch the bounds of all credibility the legend is he knew where the fires were and would lead the way.
This was dispelled by one fireman who said Wallace was merely looking and taking directions from the driver.
Anyway what better way to keep the spirit of plucky wee Wallace alive than by doing this.
I know it's what he would have wanted.

Image

Not so "ready" now are we Wallace.
The ghost of Wallace is still seen in the old Firestation, that has since been converted into a resaurant, in the past customers have complained about a strange "humping" sensation on their leg, the feeling as though something cold and wet has touched their hand along with the distinct smell of dog excrement, has wee Wallace been laying ghostly barkers eggs for customers to trod on or was it the sous chef?

Here we have the Strathclyde Police Amphibious Surveillence Unit complete with periscope.

Image

After some limited initial success it has since been withdrawn amid accusations of in-proper use.
These included the alleged spying on the Victoria Infirmary's nurses quarters, peeping through a porthole of HMS Shingles whilst harbouring in Yorkhill Basin upon unsuspecting showering Wrens and here we see it homing in on the Ladies changing room of Next, Argyle Street.

Here we have a couple of pictures featuring that famous local character Jackie Dalrymple.
Jackie popped into his local for a quick pint after work however Jackie got involved in some company and dually forgot the time, having spent most of his wages by 7pm, during which there had been an air raid, it suddenly dawned on Jackie that his wife (Big Maggie) would be waiting for him rolling pin in hand.
In a deperate attempt to get home as quickly as he can Jackie is seen here trying to hail the next available caur.

Image

Jackie did make it home where he went straight to the kitchen and turned on the gas to make a cup of tea, however Jackie fell asleep in his arm chair fag in hand and was awoken by an all mighty bang.

Image
Here we can clearly see Jackie emerging from his house complete with Big Maggies beloved budgies Abbott&Costello.

Prior to moving to Zanzibar in 1924 and taking up the post of Consular General Frederick Bulsara was a young clerk working in Rutherglen Burgh Halls, among his interest were Interior Decorating, flower pressing and hockey, below is a picture of him together with the rest of the Rutherglen District Hockey Team dated 1912.(with thanks to the glasgow story)
But can you spot "Freddy" Bulsara the Grandfather of a famous Rock star?

Image
Shortly before his hurried departure to Zanzibar, Mr Bulsara was find 40 shillings after having being caught comitting a lewid act whilst looking at images of little matchstick girls and chimney sweeps on a what the butler saw machine.
