Best beaches on the West coast..

Postby Napalm » Tue Jul 05, 2005 12:56 pm

I've got a photoshoot to do of a dramatic beach scene. Waves, rocky outcrops, thats sorta thing. I went to St Abbs at the weekend but it was calm  so I need to find another location on the West Coast thats not too far from Glasgow.

Any suggestions?

Depends how "far" you want to go. Ayr is the obvious one that springs to my mind (approx 35 miles) or maybe there will be somethin closer-between say, Gourock & Saltcoats on the A78. :?:

Halfway between Wemyss Bay and Largs there is quiet a lot of rocky outcrops - road often gets closed due to high waves.

Correct, Brian...."Skelmorlie" is the very place! That may well suffice. :)

Used to spend most of my school summer hols at my grans caravan at Weymss Bay- remember walking through the woods with my cousins to Skermorlie pretending we were "sodjies" and walking from the village down a steep road to the shore road and then back to Wemyss Bay and straight into an ear bashing from my gran

We probably deserved it as we would disappear for hours, only coming back when we wanted some grub....ahhh happy days.

Thanks very much folks! Skelmorlie sounds interesting. I am limited to public transport so it looks like I'll be taking a train to Largs and then biking it to Skelmorlie. Sound feasible?

*edit* Just remembered I need to take a tripod. Dammit this is gonna be fun, not!

Id take the train to Wemyss Bay - and cycle from there - Skelmorlie is closer to Wemyss Bay or take the bus from Wemyss Bay opposite the station dont forget to stop off for lunch in the seaview cafe on the way back.

The bus usually arrives about 5 minutes after the train arrives from Glasgow.

Looking forward to seeing your photos.

Thanks very much brian, appreciated. Tomorrows weather looks wet, but windy so I might brave it as the wind looks lacking for the rest of the week!

Ayr was a good suggestion too though, the "Maidens" can be pretty dramatic.

Better still buy a Strathclyde daytripper ticket. Valid after 9.00am Monday
to Friday and all day at weekends and Glasgow public holidays. Tickets can be bought from any staffed rail station or SPT travel centre and cost £8.50 1 adult and up to 2 children, they are not only valid on the trains but all the local bus services. (The day return from Glasgow to Weymss Bay is £5.70) Get the train to Weymss Bay then hop on the regular buses that ply between Weymss Bay and Largs, then if you want you can work your way further down the coast.

Ayr is good, aye.
First thought? Portencross, West Kilbride might be good too. There's rocks and hills and a castle and stuff.

Go to Largs and then over to Cumbrae, maybe?
