According to the dictionary (so it must be true) the entymology of the word is as follows:

"...an MSP claimed the term was an acronmy for Non Educated Delinquent and should not be used by ministers. Unfortunately, like most supposed acronymic etymologies, this one is false. "Ned" is simply one of the many terms for delinquent youths that use a shortened form of a common male forename (in this case Edward); other examples are "Teds" and "Kevs"

Hope this finally settles the discussion...or re-opens a can of worms.

That's so much bullshit. Who in the FUCK ever shortens 'Edward' to 'Ned' in Scotland?

Maybe in the further out parts of the US or Canada, but here ? 'Ed' or 'Eddie' would be the order of the day.

I put more faith in the N.E.D explanation personally.

Chris...

I had a wee thought that when the Neds find out about them being in the dictionary(somebody better tell them 'cos they'll no be able to read it!) that it might start a mutual appreciation society? Like when the wee neds have a new born ned/nedette ......they might call it Collins.......after the dictionary that gave them some respectability.

Police to ned 1...name?........Collins
Police to ned 2......name?.......Collins
Police to ned 3.....name?........Collins
Police to neds 4,5,6 etc.......you're names are Collins.

Whilst the wee neds wonder how the police got this information.

What should N.E.D stand for

Nasty Evil Dobbers
Nookie Every Day (Loads a wee NED Babies with Burbery and nike Trainers About)
Nike Ecko Diadora
Needs Early Death

And Why do NEDs alway sit in the very back seat of buses even it they are on there own? is this a protection mechanism to stop someone sneaking up on them and stealing their trainers.

It's so they can pish on the floor and smoke dope, or drink MD or Buckie.

they are certainly not going to work.

And another thing, why does the all day £2.25 ticket start when those who work are actually at work and therefore the neds are the only ones who can take advantage?

Rant over (for now)

It's because they are looking at where they have been rather than where they are going.....as there is nothing down for them.
It's also to do with the fact that the emergency exits are nearly always located at the back......so that they have a means of escape handy....hence NED stands for.......near emergency door

Not exclusive to neds to be fare  used to do them things 35 year ago when they had conductors to dodge never mind a one-person operator.

Sad to report though that Bawbag and Dobber have not yet made the dictionary. Maybe next edition...

Been watching this one with interest to see if my own assumption as to the source of the Ned term came from appeared. No luck, so I might as well get laughed at sooner rather than later

First time I heard it, I just assumed it was based on the nickname of Edward Ned Kelly, the Australian outlaw.

Too simple?
