Hey, this seems like a neat site.

I'm 34, female Canadian, but my heart belongs to Glasgow and Scotland.
My grandmother was born and raised in Scotland but was an orphan at Quarriers homes. She was shipped to Canada at 15 and has wanted to "go home" ever since.

My plan is to come to Glasgow on a UK ancestry visa for six months and if it works out, I want to move there permanently. It's going to be a long involved process, but I think it will be worth it.

I'm looking to find part time work that maybe I can partly trade for lodging. I'd also love to find a nice Scots boy to settle down with. Well, there's a start then...anyone have any ideas for me?

G and Chris - yous yins behave yirsels, this needs the hand of a more mature gentleman like, well, ah... me! Alexxe I would suggest the old well-travelled route of au pair or domestic help. Problem with this is of course that you might have to 'live-in' with the family and that can be restrictive. On the other hand if you can offer qualifications/skills; anything specialist might provide the potential for doing some sort of part-time work for the likes of a UK/Glasgow based research consultancy. Are there any prospects for finding Canada based companies or organisations that could use the services of someone like you while you were based in the U.K.?

Wow...thanks for all the replies, guys. I should point out that I am a girl.

Anyhow, my great grandmother was actually a domestic servant at a hotel at 3 Buckingham Terrace before she passed away at age 26. Can anyone tell me if there is still a hotel there?

There are companies here that I know are UK based like HMV and the Body Shop. I have a huge wealth of skills, from clerical/secretarial/reception to government work to social work to journalism. I have a 2 year college diploma in Community Social Service Work.

Sigh, this is all very complicated. Something I saw that looked interesting was flatshare situations, and I saw one where a woman who was disabled would discount rent for assistance in her home.

Any more ideas for me?

Buckingham Terrace is still very much there. I'll check it out as to it's Hotel status next time I pass it.

Hi Alexxe
There are a couple of hotels in Buckingham Terrace, but not at number three. There are plenty of employment agencies in Glasgow, presumably reachable through the web, and the local papers also have their job pages on-line (these are The Herald, the Evening Times, the Daily Record). If there's anything specific you think I could research for you, drop me a private line. Best of luck with your searching.

Thanks so much, this is exactly the type of work I'm looking for, and there are lots of temporary and job share positions as well.

How did you come by knowing about this site?

Hi alexxe
Not sure if you were referring to me, but here goes. I found the Hidden Glasgow site through Google. I was searching for combinations of 'secret' and 'hidden' and 'Glasgow' and 'Scotland', looking for what other people thought might be odd or unusual about my city and country. As well as some very off-the-wall sites, I found this one, and have been asking and answering questions here for the past six weeks or so.

Sorry for the confusion

:?
Sorry about that, Ronnie...sent you a private message. No actually, I meant to thank the person (can't pick up the name right now) who ref'd me to the Glasgow government site, there was a lot there that's along what I'm looking for.

So tell me everyone, what are some of the best things about Glasgow?
What should I not miss?

Also, what are areas of the city that I should not live in (unsafe, etc) and what are the best areas (cheaper rent, safe, close to inexpensive pastimes)? I'm sort of shooting for the West End so far.

Thank you all.
