I remember a photograph poor old Lord George Brown apparently having somehow lost his footing whilst alighting from a car: I suspect that image did him no real favours. Was he not instrumental in the euphemism tired and emotional coming about? I always like him anyway, not least because latterly there was something of the Thunderbirds about his coupon: Parker maybe?

Eejit here, despite never having seen even so much as a still from the tv series, has bought the entire set of the 'A game of thrones' books, wholly on the basis of the John Lanchester review in the LRB.

What's the tv series like? No spoilers please, btw.

According to both my sisters it is excellent, although apparently may be hard to follow in places if you haven't read the books as some parts (lengthy wars, battles etc) get skimmed.

They keep insisting I'd love it.

Maybe next winter!

Well, I'm just about to read the books. The review in question.

Anyone who quotes Neal Stephenson in the first paragraph is fine by me. Possibly trump-able only by quoting Greg Egan. What with DFW being dead now, and all.

The books very very good apart from the final one which I didn't bother finishing. The TV series does deviate, concatenate and eviscerate as TV interpretations of books generally do.

Ta, both.

I'm tempted to start a new thread with this query, but from that article

For reasons I’ve never seen explained or even thoroughly engaged with, there seems to be an unbridgeable crevasse between the SF/fantasy audience and the wider literate public. People who don’t usually read, say, thrillers or military history or popular science will read, say, Gone Girl or Berlin or Bad Pharma. But people who don’t read fantasy just simply, permanently, 100 per cent don’t read fantasy.

I reckon that's as true a thing as I ever did read. Thoughts?

Captain Horatio Hornblower R.N. - recently rediscovered a number of the Hornblower series in a box I had in the loft I hadn't opened for 30 years. 8)
