A text message system which could be used to alert the public to an emergency will be tested in Glasgow on Thursday, 3 October, as part of a UK government trial of new technology.

SMS as emergency danger warning to deaf and hard of hearing people was tried a few years ago and found wanting.

Sometimes the SMS system couldn't cope with the volume.

Sometimes the SMS texts took up to an hour to arrive (which might have been a symptom of the above).

ye i wondered about the delay you get sometimes.

the US has been using this system for a couple of years now and "seem" to have ironed out the problems so maybe with todays updated techno the volume might not be an issue
