Where was this photo taken?

Postby War Baby » Mon Sep 02, 2013 6:36 pm

The attached photo is of my mother, taken around 1939. I believe it was taken in Glasgow but don't know where.
I live in in east end of Glasgow, and I would like to go to have a look at the statue to try to figure out what it represents.

When I enlarge the photo to fill the screen, I can just make out that the first word says Jesus - but other words follow and I am curious to know what they say. Does anyone know if this statue is still exists in a Glasgow park?

I've had a look through Ray McKenzie's books, 'Sculpture in Glasgow' and 'Public Sculpture of Glasgow' and haven't seen the statue in your photograph. However, not all the statues are photographed. I'm convinced if the statue is in Glasgow, it will be in his book somewhere.

You could look on the website http://www.glasgowsculpture.com.

It definitely looks like it was taken in a park, but it could be any park in the surrounding area, unfortunately.

I am only guessing but the statue MIGHT be quoting from the passage in the bible where it has Jesus saying: "Suffer the little children to come unto me." The first word is definitely "Jesus". (I am not religious myself).

My mother was one of a family of nine children. Four died in either in infancy or within two weeks of being born. So there were some tragedies in the family concerning babies, and this may be what was on her mind at the time. I thought it might be Kelvingrove Park. But probably not.

Is it possible it may have been taken in the grounds of a convent/abbey or Retreat?

What about Langside, Carfin or Nunraw Abbey?

Pingu,
That is amazing how close in style, and clothes they are wearing, etc your image is to mine. In fact, for a second I was convinced they were the same! ...On the plinth below, it says "Presented by Sir Charles Tennant Bar" .... but I think there is slight damage to the statue and the word Bar may not be the full word there. I doubt if he was the actual sculpturist himself.

ibtg,
I tried your link to see if there was a sculptorist with this name but I didn't see him.

The statue shown by pingu is by Charles Benham Grassby, according to http://www.glasgowsculpture.com

'His best known architectural work in the city is the group representing Christ Restoring Sight To A Blind Child on the tower of the former Blind Asylum, 92 Castle Street (1881)'

http://www.glasgowsculpture.com/pg_biog ... grassby_cb

Sir Charles Tennant would be the benefactor who presented the statue.

Getting back to the statue in War Baby's photograph... Looking at the hi-res, could that be a third figure sprawled at the feet of Jesus?

A.N. Other has intimated that they arepretty sure they have photos of the same statue and they think it might be in the promenade at Rothesay.

Ring any bells with anyone?
