Thirded.

Please pardon my ignorance; I'm in awe of anyone who can manage more than a basic service on even an older motor like this. My own skill/knowledge level is woefully short to manage something like this.
Some people hear voices.. Some see invisible people.. Others have no imagination whatsoever.

Thanks chaps, I have never worried about talking to myself so I will carry on regardless.

Didint get anything done at the weekend on the Beetle. Fastback passed its MOT on Tuesday, we went to the Bridge of Allan classic car show on Sunday in the Golf then a run over the Dukes pass (turns out with the roof down and the wind in your hair it is very easy to end up with a very sunburnt wife :oops: ) and the Golf is in for MOT today.

I hope the Golf passes without too much as the rain is now on. Much more fun in the sun;

Back on topic, Ed got the pans up on the side again at the end of last week and coated them with Gravitex followed by primer. The underside of the car will be as glossy as the top but the texture will protect from stone chips and deaden any road noise;

Cant believe its so long since I updated this thread.

Things slowed down a little due to injury but the rear vallance is now in place along with engine side trays and the rear corners of the engine bay;

Image

While Ed was working on the body I have been working on the engine. I was going to wait and post the full version of the engine build video but its taking me ages to edit so here is the last chapter;

I have also been dealing with TMI interiors to get seat covers organised. The swatches arrived yesterday so we will be ordering up seat covers and door cards in red;

Image

I want to try and have them paid for by tomorrow incase the in-out vote causes the pound to crash and they will cost me more.

Whoop-whoop, I have had an update through from Ed the man.

Fester the beetle was wheeled out into the sun while the garage was cleared out;

Image

This will be the last time it will see daylight while in grey primer as it was wheeled back in and the body lifted back off the pan;

Image

Ready for masking up to have the inner arches coated in stone chip;

Image

Image

Image

Current plan is to have the shell in primer by tomorrow then top coat can start.

I now have seat covers ordered but thanks to brexit it could cost about £50-£70 more than it would have depending how well the pound climbs in the next 4 weeks.

Other jobs needing done;

Paint the back of the bumpers
get the steering wheel re-covered in leather
get the engine down to Ed's
get wheels up for powder coating
find somewhere that will seal and powdercoat the fuel tank

Shouldnt be too long now before it all looks to be coming back together.

I had another update from Ed. After working past midnight on Wednesday, Fester is now looking blacker than a jam jar full of shadows;

Image

It looks like Batman's wash bag.

Maybe leave it this colour and avoid speed cameras with its stealth bomber anti radar paint.

Getting exciting now, top coat of gloss will be next week sometime.

Another parcel from the TMI guy today.

Guess I will be doing a seat upholstery thread soon;

Image

Biggest worry with ordering from a company 5000 miles away was the colour match with the door cards and seat covers, especially when they were special order so no refund or exchange. Thankfully the match is perfect;

Image

I have a few projects to get out the way then I will be stripping the old seats to paint and re-cover.

Todays job, start getting the fuel tank ready.

Nothing major, its in ok shape and not leaking so its a strip and paint.

Started with this;

Image

Image

After an assault with the twist brush;

Image

Image

Ever wondered how a reserve tap works? Early Beetles and Sparkafers (the lowest spec cars) didnt come with fuel gauges so the reserve tap was the solution. In the car there is a lever under the dash thet goes to the reserve tap on the tank. This is the working end.

Image

On the normal setting, the fuel supply is taken by the long tube. When the car starts to stutter from fuel starvation you flip the lever to draw from the smaller tube and try and get to the nearest garage before the fuel level drops below the small tube.

The important bit is to return the lever to the correct side after filling up or the next time it stutters you will be completely out of fuel.

Anyway, back to the tank. Quick coat of paint, as this is the underside and not seen its gloss paint applied with a brush but the top side will get sprayed with semi gloss so that it looks good.

Image

Image

Is it just me or does the tank look like Bucky O'Hare?

The lack of updates dosnt mean nothing has been happening.

For the last couple of weeks I have been stripping and painting seat frames and today I finished re-covering the back seat;

Just finished off fitting the drivers seat, still need to warm up the vinyl with a heat gun to tighten up the sides and smooth out the covers fully but Im pretty chuffed with the progress.

Just had an update from bodywork HQ. The shell is now contained in its bubble and the outside is masked off to allow the inside of the car to start getting its gloss black paint applied.

Day of ups and downs yesterday. Passenger front seat base is now covered and I almost had the back rest complete until my hand slipped and I got an 8mm long spike in my hand;

Image

Dosnt look big but was deep enough to hit something solid inside me hand.

Then the day took a better turn when Ed messaged me at about 11pm with some exciting pictures;

Image

Image

Amazing to see some deep gloss going on.

I spent the afternoon in the garage today finishing off the interior for the car.

Still needs a wee heat to tighten the vinyl but I think its worked out not too bad.
