Girls' names

Postby Josef » Wed Dec 21, 2011 11:46 am

So, have a look at the General Register for Scotland's list of female baby forenames used in 2011. (warning : it's a PDF)

How many of the 101 names in the list did a girl in your year at school have? And what percentage of them had a name in the list?

I reckon it's about 2% either way for my year, which had well over a hundred girls. I had to go down to number 55 before I found a matching name.

Astonishing. You expect names to drift in and out of popularity, but that's virtually a wipe-out.

My other half, the lovely Maggie, is a head teacher at a large nursery school. Every year's registration brings up new names but my current favourite is Tonka.
My grand- daughter, Isla Mary, goes to a Steiner school 'kindie' in Melbourne where this year's intake includes Hendrix,
Odin, Roman,Silkie and Sabi.

Durachdan,

Eddy

I can remember most names from my primary school. Most are way down the lists ( if there at all), mind you I didn't go to school with many Enochs or Williaminas :)

I'm just sorry to see the slipping of mason from 24 to 31.

Out of interest, I had thirteen girls in my Year 3 Class (Nine year olds) this year and eleven of their names feature on the list.

I happen to know quite a lot of people, and went to school with people named on both sides of the list. Less interestingly I also found all of my pets names on the list...quite far up too...;)

I'd have expected David (which I'm sure includes many of the diminutives) to be higher on the boys list given the proportion of who frequent the HG board. :D
