Connecting speakers to a tv

Postby glasgowken » Tue Mar 29, 2011 7:40 pm

My old boxy tv gave up this morning so I bought a JVC LCD tv. Now I'm not that savvy with audio stuff :? Anyone know if it's possible to buy a set of cheapish speakers for this sort of tv, and do they just connect to the headphone socket or is there a better way to do it ?

Cheers :)

I'd imagine if there isn't a dedicated speaker outlet, you'll be needing to run through an external amplifier of some sort (including a stereo, if it has the right inputs).

I have an LG TV of recent vintage and that has a headphone socket that I can plug into an external set of speakers. It's a bit crap though because the output isn't much and I just make do with the inbuilt speakers unless I decide to use the home theatre PC. I have a TV cable running into this and use the DVI output to plug into the telly and run the audio output to the external speakers. There's probably a similar way of doing this if you run stuff from a DVR or VCR.

If you're looking to get better sound that the TV speakers give you then you're looking at getting a home cinema system or external amplifier. Just connecting speakers straight to the TV wouldn't give any better sound. Have a wee read here.... http://www.the-home-cinema-guide.com/

and the Surround Sound Section http://www.the-home-cinema-guide.com/surround-sound-systems.html

Watching a film from a DVD connected to a proper surround system is so much better than two TV speakers but it can get pricey

Ah, I was hoping to get away with sticking a £30 set of speakers in somewhere :? I don't need it to be surround sound, just a wee bit better than the inbuilt speakers :(

Televisions should have R.C.A. jacks for outputting sound to an external sound source or video camera etc.. If you have a hi fi with an auxiliary input, that'll do fine. Mine is connected using the "tape" input. Sound quality is awesome compared to even decent tellies.

Ken,

I don't think you can just connect your TV to a set of extension speakers without the use of an amplifier. But, if you have a Stereo System with the appropriate connection points, you can usually make a connection there to provide better sound all around.

Look for connections marked Audio Line Out from your TV and connect to Audio Line In in the back of your audio system.

Well, I won't mention the Optical output from my telly via a Cambridge Audio DAC and balanced line inputs to my Audio Analogue Maestro Settanta amp or my B&W 802 speakers then... :P

I would space those speakers a bit. Maybe stick the telly between them. Then you'll get the full effect of a Class 37 crossing a junction.

Actually, I just turned them that way for the photie. Normally I sit with my head between them. ::):

And I can beat a class 37 - I do have a quadrophonic recording of various steam trains around the world that I used to scare the neighbours with by playing it very loudly at 2 in the morning... until I managed to blow one of the bass cones on the the 802's (despite their thermal cut-outs).
That was in the early days, you understand.... :)
