Hawd the boat, hawd the boat. I was over that way one saturday for the first time in many years last summer. I walked up and down Victoria road & like Leith Walk in Embra, it took me back to days gone by. Turning into Alison Street was like entering another world, 95% of the faces on view were 'Asian', something I have not seen since 1972 when I was passing through an area of Manchester en route to the airport, no idea which area but every face was black or asian, not at all something I was used to.
Anyway, getting back to hanging about street corners, Alison Street reminded me so much of what we have lost in terms of community, paint the faces white & it could have been any corner in Clydebank (my home town, or any other town centre) It's what close knit comunities did on a saturday, the women shopped & the men either stood on the street corners gabbing or sat in the pub drinking & gabbing. It made me awffy homesick for the past.
On the bright side, another sight on the street confirmed my faith that old values will continue, I passed an old guy sitting in a close giving it laldy with Frank Sinatra songs, pished as a fart & asian from top to toe.
Agreed, excellent post, btw, Dex.
