I can't say I've ever paid any attention to the tattoos on the necks of guys standing at street corners but hey, each to their own.
I hear the people sing.

I was in Neeson's tonight for the pool competition final and can't say I saw anything extraordinary about the tattoos on display. A fellow drinker kindly lent me his guardian to read and his tattoos if he had any were well hidden. I did note that one of the TVs was switched to a news channel whilst the other with the sound up was tuned to Magic which was having a Valentine special and the slushiest music imaginable. It was good to have a drink with the fellow sons of immigrants who were subject to campaigns to go back where they came from ,w ere vilified for their religion and large families and for standing about street corners in apparent idleness. Of course the then Daily Mail (we support Chancellor Hitler) made no mention of tattoos.

There's a significant amount of private housing for rent in Govanhill and and a number of the flats are over crowded with new Glaswegians so the men of the families tend to congregate on street corners and sing whilst sober which obviously causes concern to previous waves of immigrants and their lapsed sons and daughters.

Here's a photo of them standing idle but not singing

Idleness? In Brigton? Perish the notion.

That must share with Parkhead Cross the distinction of being one of the very few untouched areas of the East End. Although admittedly it's been a while since I was up Shettleston Road.

Hawd the boat, hawd the boat. I was over that way one saturday for the first time in many years last summer. I walked up and down Victoria road & like Leith Walk in Embra, it took me back to days gone by. Turning into Alison Street was like entering another world, 95% of the faces on view were 'Asian', something I have not seen since 1972 when I was passing through an area of Manchester en route to the airport, no idea which area but every face was black or asian, not at all something I was used to.

Anyway, getting back to hanging about street corners, Alison Street reminded me so much of what we have lost in terms of community, paint the faces white & it could have been any corner in Clydebank (my home town, or any other town centre) It's what close knit comunities did on a saturday, the women shopped & the men either stood on the street corners gabbing or sat in the pub drinking & gabbing. It made me awffy homesick for the past. :(

On the bright side, another sight on the street confirmed my faith that old values will continue, I passed an old guy sitting in a close giving it laldy with Frank Sinatra songs, pished as a fart & asian from top to toe. ::):

Agreed, excellent post, btw, Dex.

You would not want to be hangin around street corners in Alison Street HH. There is absolutly no sense of community there now. When the Unique Cafe closed we never went back up there. Even a lot of the asian shopkeepers I knew from the fruit market give it a wide berth.
Thank you. And why not.

hazy, I drive that way quite often and I find it quite intimidating at times. Even at 1 in the morning they're still stood there!
