Phone hacking inquiries

"In Scotland, Strathclyde Police have already been tasked by the Crown Office to examine aspects of the evidence presented during the Tommy Sheridan perjury trial. Regarding specific claims of phone hacking and breaches of data protection in Scotland, Strathclyde Police will also review the available information and liaise with the Metropolitan Police in relation to any Scottish dimension to their current investigations, and report their findings to the Area Procurator Fiscal at Glasgow."

The press release Mori cites says

"Mr Salmond said:

"A judge-led public inquiry into the appalling hacking activity at News of the World, and breaches of data protection laws across the newspaper industry, is clearly the right and proper course of action.

"We already know from the Information Commissioner's Operation Motorman report in December 2006 of over 3,000 breaches of data protection across a range of titles, yet nothing was done by successive Westminster governments despite his recommendations for tough action. The inquiry also needs to establish why this has been the case.

"In terms of the additional inquiry announced by the Prime Minister into the broader conduct of the press, if he is discussing its scope and remit with opposition leaders at Westminster, he must also consult with the parliaments and assemblies of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, given the diversity of the media across the different nations of the UK."

Is he really saying it's OK for A judge to look into the criminality across the UK but it'll need separate investigations into general conduct in the different jurisdictions?

Did he run that past MacAskill?

Shamed Sheridan ‘is to be free in weeks’

9 Jan 2012

JAILED politician Tommy Sheridan is to be freed at the end of this month, after serving a year of his three-year sentence, according to reports.
The ex-MSP and former leader of the Scottish Socialist Party (SSP) was jailed in January 2010, at the High Court in Glasgow after being found guilty of committing perjury in 2006 during his successful defamation action against the News of the World.
Since September, the 47-year-old has been allowed out of jail for a week every month, on home leave.
Now, Sheridan is due for release on January 26, exactly a year after he was sentenced. He will return home full-time to his wife, Gail, 47, and daughter Gabrielle.
It is understood he will be forced to wear a tag for six months and ordered to obey a strict curfew, which means he will not be able to leave his house at night

Much as though I lean left politically, and I am all for wealth of society over that of the individual I've never been a fan of the bloke...felt sorry for him though in the way the NOTW got their revenge by publishing all those pictures of him in women's knickers, tights and suspenders.....the ultimate indignity for someone who always liked to paint himself as a man's man.... ::):

Whatever the rights & wrongs of the case, it was a bit rich, the staggering Henry McLetchie demand that TS should be back behind bars. Is this the same "Taxi for McLetchie"who was caught with his fingers in the Scotpeeps till? and should have been booked for a dock appearance himself toot sweet!

Surprised no comment on Sheridan's antics on his release (the old pathetic raising of the weak fist) and his balderdash about the 'fight goes on'.
Comrade its verging on wankerism and somebody (not your lawyer) needs to give you a bit of a slap. There is no fight anymore, you lost - big style. Its now time you tried to get a job to support your family, your wife needs a break from that burden that she's carried for the last twenty years.

Che Sheridan is history pal. Time to join the real working class again.

Over the fact that they took her rosary beads away or because she found out her husband was a serial adulterer?

Loos like Sheridan has given Anwar his jotters for taking Murdoch's dosh.

He is being held on suspicion of committing perjury at the trial of former MSP Tommy Sheridan in 2010.

He has been detained not arrested, which means Strathclyde Police have 12 hours to question him then either charge or release (that clock started ticking the moment he was detained)

In Scottish legal system, police will have to either charge or release Coulson at end of his detention, no "police bail"

It is also worth noting that in Scotland perjury can only be proved if evidence given materially affected outcome of case.
