There were three for 40p and labelled as "Cornish." Sardines are really cheap mainly because most people prefer to buy fillets rather than cope with whole fish which have to be gutted etc though it's not a difficult job.
Tesco and Morrison's have good fish counters these days and offer quite a range but most punters still go for cod and haddock when sardines, pouting, hake and other fish are cheaper and just as good.
I note that the fishmonger, Corrigans, in Byres Rd has closed "due to market conditions."
