I actually do believe it's on a shaky nail too .. but convicted he stands. It's up to the legal system to quash the conviction, not some transient politician with an agenda.

But what if you believe that it was transient politicians with an agenda who brought him before the court in the first place?

Megrahi has applied to withdraw his appeal and that, as I pointed out yesterday, means we'll probably never know the truth. He will also die a guilty man.

Loads of people are falsely accused John .. it's up to a good defence to use the court machinery to prove innocence. Tory Boy or Red Ken stepping up as a Johhny-Come-Lately and using a pardon as some sort of political jemmy is not on.

Like Onny said .. it's a mute point now as the man has abandoned his appeal and we'll never know. But maybe not knowing is what the powers that be want .. something nasty in the dirty washing perhaps?

I find Hilary C,s comments feckin hysterical. Coming from a country that openly gave refuge to nazi war criminals so as they could help develop the atomic bomb. No matter what is the final out come it will be the wrong one.

PS Megrahi dropping his appeal does not leave the prison transfer option open (according to today's Herald); the Crown is still appealing against the length of sentence. For prison transfer to work there must be no judicial processes underway. Odd, so it is.

It is just like the Shirley McKee case all over again.

It makes perfect sense to MacAskill. With the Crown appeal ongoing MacAskill hasn't escaped having the option of a prisoner transfer so his choices are 1) do nothing (please the Yanks and annoy the fuck out of Libya) and 2) go for the 'humanitarian' option (a much easier case to sell internationally).

What does surprise me is why, if Megrahi is to be released, it wasn't done overnight last night. It wouldn't have been too difficult to smuggle Megrahi out of Gateside and have him safely tucked up at home before 1pm today.

So the deed has been done. I felt that MacAskill was acting like a school teacher teling a story in his monolgue as he spoke before he took questions. Right then Onny in your legal expertease and opinion break it down for us minnions.
