The term 'NED' arose from the Social Exclusion Unit who wanted as much participation from the public as possible in their work. They recruited as many smartly uniformly-tracksuited-dressed young people that they could entice and proceeded to tell these young people that they were now classed as Non Executive Directors of the SEU. After being inducted the young tracksuited brigade were at a loss on what to call themseves until they heard the CEO shout down the corridor to them....'Thank's for your participation all you NEDs'.........hence it was borne from the appropriately named government department Social Exclusion Unit.

It's always been in use, I believe it stemmed from the Teddy boys, Neds were those that aspired to be Teddy boys but never had the right dress-code and were ostracised and declared Neds. It's only in the last 10 year that Neds have come into the spotlight, but the wee bastirts have just been stunting their growth 'til there were enough of them with a collective dress sense of their own  to have some corporate identity.

actually I was a bit pissed off with the definition of ned in the dictionary...

"a young working-class male who dresses in casual sports clothes".

mainly annoyed because they make the assumption that its a working-class male - those of us with any experience of neds know fine well that neither they or their parents have any intention of ever working, hence making the term working class defunct in their description.

Its also quite insulting to the working class masses who dont partake in the antisocial shit that the average ned does.

And of course contrary to what ive already said about the term working class - what about the middle class kids who dress like neds, act like neds, hang around in gangs like neds and for all intents and purposes are neds but with a middle class background? (I spent my teens in bishopbriggs where all those lovely middle class kids would try to create a "hood" atmosphere and terrorised anyone they saw)

NEDS - wee gits with no ambition, no conscience, no intelligence, no forward-thinking and no quality of life.

What are female neds called - sengas?

NED is a condition that affects people with the belief that they live in a land of Never Ending Daylight, hence the reason why they wear those feckin' stoopit basebaw caps.

However they have graced us with some fairly amusing insults, e.g 'bawbag'.,and I quite like 'ya pie'. (Courtesy of Karen Dunbar).

Don't know why they go into a hissy fit when called 'daftie' mind you. Maybe there is some kind ogf ned sub text going on there that renders the word their equivalent of inappropriate Koran fondling.

Could be Necrotic Epiglotal Deficiency, given that they all seem to share the same speech defect that has them speaking with the same peculiar effect of talking up and through the back of their nasal tracts.
