British teenagers

Postby frank dawson » Thu Nov 02, 2006 6:54 pm

Last night when I was watching the 10 o'clock news I heard a report stating that British teenagers were the worst in Europe for drunkeness, fighting and bad manners.
Today's evening news gives another report stating that sexually transmitted diseases amongst teenagers are increasing at an alarming rate.
Am I an old fuddy duddy because I feel like saying "I told you so"?

Since I was starting to get deja vu, I had a wee poke around the HG back catalog. Threads started by Frank are :

Are today's children spoilt (self explanatory)
Obesity in young people in Britain (kids these days are all fat bastards)
The £50million pound holidays (parents these days spend too much money on their kids)
I don't have the time to cook proper meals! (parents these days can't even be bothered cooking)
Whole milk to be stopped in schools (experts these days, they don't know what they're talking about)
Our fantastic N.H.S (Astonishingly, positive)
Poor but Sporty (Kids these days, they do nothing but drink)
Emotional trauma (Judges these days, are they mad?)
Anyone one for Dessert? (Neutral)
New National anthem from another Glasgow site (Glasgow these days, it's terrible)
British teenagers (Teenagers these days, all they do is drink, shag and fight)

We get the point, Frank.

No doubt for the very reason given above, Frank. We're all Daily Mail-ed out.

what i get annoyed it is a small group of ppl thinking that all young ppl and teenagers are all spawn of satan - yes there are some like that but not all of them. there are some ppl a lot older than that who behave the same way but nothing is ever mentioned about them

maybe we should start a new thread about all the older ppl that are problems - neighbours from hell etc

I did'nt compile the reports!
Come on now let's have a proper discussion.
I have never said that all teenagers are like what it says in the reports. :)

No you didn't. I really don't bear you any ill will, Frank, if you think that my posts here have been malicious: in my Deja Vu-inspired rake through the back catalog, I see you have made several valid and interesting points. But the cumulative effect of the threads you have started (as opposed to the ones that you have contributed posts to) cannot but give the distinct impression that in fact you do think that.

You have mentioned that you ran a Glasgow Youth Club in your pre-Essex days. Would it be unfair to suggest that perhaps you are just saying 'These things wouldn't have happened on my watch?' In which case, I am (genuinely) sure that you are correct.

But every generation has to be given the opportunity to define itself, which they often do by taking the more visible of their parents' beliefs/attitudes and going to the opposite pole. Current teenagers will get themselves on an even keel, as all generations do. The generation now writing the 'binge drinking shock' headlines, are after all, the ones who were the culprits in the 'Ecstasy Rave Orgy' scare headlines in the eighties. Perhaps the next generation will be the Temperance one.

And lest we not forget, it was the fifties that invented the 'teenager' in the first place. When were you a teenager again, Frank :) ?

On the other hand and trying to put a positive spin on this dreary news could it be argued that compared to their mainland European counterparts, our lads are handy with the dukes up, don't drink like poofs and aren't scared of the beard.

Bring back borstals, National Service, Boot Camps. Introduce the birch and if one is caught stealing for a third time, then let the stealing hand be removed by a skilled blade in public.

But where will we find a skilled blade in Glasgow? It will probably have to remain a mere pipe dream, alas.

But what's the practical difference between National Service and Boot Camps?
