PC?

Postby mrsam » Thu Feb 12, 2009 11:43 pm
I repeat, what is PC?
just to clear up an issue PC = political correctness = the catch all term for the wave of 80's and 90's anti sexism / anti racialism / attemt at unity by de personalising things = eg lollypopman becomes lollypopperson. Now has been used to describe people who appear to exclude any sensetive issues for the sake of health and safety and the fear of causing a scene - the dutch politician refused entry to Britain was refused entry by the PC brigade/ sensible people (depending on your viewpoint (I'd go with PC but hey))

Hope this helps

depends if your view and the official view match and don't offend anyone...

It's a fine line between offending someone who holds something sacred and making a joke, the problem is one mans joke is another mans offensive comment, just follow Private Eye and slag off fictional representations. Ie the Secret Glasgow grumblers

Well I only worry about the stupid PC shit, yes if you single out a group then the whole PC thing will get out of hand but most of it is localised and only amplified because skin colour/religious birthright comes into place.

I'll be in ( at least) 2 minds about PC forever.

On the one hand - I don't like abuse of any kind aimed at people because of who they are (bent, buggered, daft, dozy, twunky, golliwogged, cooned, tinted, shortenned, embiggnned, whatevere'd) - but the continual onslaught of apparent directions on how I should order my thinking (for it is just such a tactic as that ) gets right on my wick.

1984 - (a fine book - must get a new copy some time)- included the concept of reducing the number of words in the dictionary to reduce the vocabulary of thought - Newspeak ! ---- How is that different to PCspeak ? PCspeak seeks to modify our vocabulary in order to eventually modify our opinions......

Watched the news the morning . Seems its still ok to call people GINGER. PC is used when people want it to be used. If it was universal my nephew would not have taken so much abuse off people. In my opinion its went well over the mark. The majority of it is completly stupid. PC pure crap.
Thank you. And why not.

apparently the song that nursery aged kids sing "what do we do with a drunken sailor" is to be changed because it promotes drinking

I've noticed and used the search engine to confirm that the Govanhill thread that got people so fired up has gone from the forum. Is this political correctness/dimished freedom of speech at work?

yes. Its gone. and its not because of misplaced notions of being PC. There were racist comments made and the person was called on it. Calling someone on being racist is not being PC.

The threads were canned because they were full of irrational and frequently deliberately trollish nonsense. Those sort of threads really don't have a place here and I (and Id guess at 99% of the rest of the HG users) get sick to fucking death of reading and having to deal with them. Does anyone actually want to read that out of anything other than morbid fascination to see where it will go?

What HG needs is freedom from trolls.

Any proof of that? Or is it just hearsay like most of these "apparently I've that X is to be stopped from doing Y or Z" stories?

I have a kid of nursery age, and I can tell you that story is utter bollocks.
