Herald

The entire Scotsport team at STV was given three months' notice yesterday in the wake of the SPL highlights show being ditched by the broadcaster.

The move came after it was announced the Monday night show, presented by Andy Walker and Grant Stott, will finish at the end of this season.

The TV station blamed the decision on a five-year deal BBC Scotland thrashed out with the league for highlights.

Living abroad, I pay an annual fee of around 35 pounds/year to get live comms of games as well as video highlights, interviews, etc. Just installed a 7 megabite DSL line which will allow me to stream live TV coverage of games and other internet content straight onto my TV (decent video card required). Programmes like Scotsport were not adapting to the new reality. Why wait for a specific programme when you can pull the content up on the PC at a time of your choosing?

The concept of the "national" TV licence is done. The internet is increasingly about content and better bandwidth is making that easier. The UK is peeing into the wind as it tries to restrict access to content. The work arounds were available within days of that.

Why should UK consumers pay a licence fee for content that is enjoyed by the rest of the world? Now is the time to work out a good alternative (probably advertising of some form). 2017 is too late.

TV output is avaible on just about any graphics card made in the past five years, even on machines with crappy intel integrated graphics chipsets like mine.

Aw fuck it's Hughie Green. Some of us believe that advertising is responsible for most of the shite on UK TV.

You'll be suggesting next that the BBC could earn millions but running fixed phone in competitions.

I reckon the licence fee would be value for money even if all you got was live Radio4.

I don't always agree with what, or who, Auntie spends the money on but web features like Listen Again and iPlayer are great.

A few stories in this weeks sunday herald about how the public are losing confidence in BBC and its justification of the licence fee value.

yes at least Scottish have improved their quality 100% by dropping Scotsport.

And one wonders what the BBC will say about the recent events at The Herald/Evening Times. Readers don't appear to value them very much either.

£2.50 a week for the online content alone is a bargain.

..As is the sheer honour of being able to go down to electric luvvyland and watch all the gods, demi-gods and semi-demi-gods too-ing and fro-ing in their shiney new galley-ship. If you're a VERY good obedient little prole they MIGHT even let one of your sons or daughters work in the canteen... AFTER of course they've spent two years studying for an HND in media production.... Don't expect to find any substantial work there though.... Not unless 'daddy' knows somone important and/or you went to the 'right' school....

Or the utter joy at being able to watch the BBC's "Two pints" channel.... night after night after night....

As for the sheer peace of mind that knowin St Jonathan of Ross has his 18 mil tucked up nicely......

The BBC is now, and has been for the 28 years that I've worked in the industry been an elitist cabal the main function of which is to provide jobs for those and such as those. It has to be said that BBC Scotland is less guilty of this that the Englandshire parent. But still; it's largely about jobs for the boys, chasing a few minority agendas and generally turning out a lot of pretentious pish. Frankly, a harsh dose of commercial reality woul do them no harm at all!

As for using ghestappo tactics and employing people with enough of a mental disorder to happily spend their days dressed up as pseudo-cops in order to harass a few measly quid out of the poorest and most easily upset sectors of society...

£2.50 a week is a lot of money when you've only £15 left in your hand after paying your rent, council tax and putting a heat in the place. And it's the folk in THAT position that the TV license people try to bully.....

Wow what a chip you have on yer shoulder there son!
You get a knock back from the BBC so it must be because they're elitist blah blah blah.........
Sour grapes of the highest order.

Bridging television’s digital divide

Fact and fiction

MYTH
The whole of Scotland is switching to digital in November.

Wrong. The switchover is being phased in over the next four years, one TV region at a time, starting with the Borders in November.

FACT
If you are over-75, or qualify for certain disability benefits or are registered blind or partially sighted you are eligible to receive a set-top digital box plus help with its installation and use, from Digital UK.

You will have to pay £40 towards the cost of that help, unless you also receive income support, jobseekers allowance or pension credits - in which case help is free.

MYTH
You will have to throw out your old TV.

Wrong. Almost all TVs, even black and white ones, can be converted to digital with a set-top digital box.

FACT
You will no longer be able to record TV programmes with your DVD player or video on one channel while you are watching another channel. If you still want to record programmes in this way after the switchover you will need to buy a digital TV recorder.

MYTH
I can carry on watching TV without switching to digital.

Wrong. The whole country is switching to the new digital TV signal, and some time between now and 2012 the traditional TV signal will be switched off in your area, so you won't be able to watch TV unless you have gone digital too.

FACT
If your aerial gives you a good picture now it should continue to do so after the switchover

IMHO - within 10 years the majority of viewing content will be streamed over the internet either on a subscription, pay per view or advertising basis. The only thing stopping it happening sooner is bandwidth but that limitation is getting smaller year on year.
