New Bar Blog

Postby the bar biographer » Tue Dec 22, 2009 9:03 pm

Hi Everybody

Great forum. Very informative, especially the old Partick pubs thread.

For anybody interested I've begun a wee independent blog that's a commentary on pubs and other drinking venues.

Primarily the focus is on Glasgow but themes and observations on places further afield will appear soon.

I've not stuck to a rigid one-size-fits-all format you normally see in newspapers or online reviwes. There are small anecdote, update pieces, medium reviews and longer-in depth features on bars yesterday, today and into the future.

It's on blogspot and the address is: http://thebarbiographer.blogspot.com

Hope you'll have a look.

Cheers

Thanks, pal. There will be more up soon, hopefully over the festive period. Failing that, early January.

Cheers.

Am I the only person whose eyes go skelly trying to read that white-on-black text, btw?

A very interesting read there, what you said in the opening lines about folk not thinking of hotel bars when going out for a drink is spot on. You should give the 'Sherbrooke Castle Hotel' on the south side a go, I've always enjoyed it, like to read your thought on the place.

I see what you mean Josef, when I was typing this there were black lines running all over my keyboard / retinas. 8O

Yeah, I'll take a wee look at the Sherborne soon. Quite a good website.

I've changed the font and background of the blog. I though it looked good with the black background but agree that if you're reading lots of text it can have that effect on the eyes!

I've posted a blog today on the Xmas experience...

Cheers, bb.As readable as it was, but not left imprinted on the retina for ten minutes afterwards. Although it might still be a bit hallucinatory - I'm sure it was white one minute and grey the next....

The Common on Byres Road has made no discernible progress since it replaced Russell’s. This is surprising for a venture fronted by the Universal team.

I have a vague notion that Bobsey Mullen has passed this one over to his former Universal bar manager (and a couple of other ex-U staff), and now only has The Griffin.

Cheers, J.

Let's just say the fonts/templates etc for the blog are a work in progress!

Don't know if any of you have tried Brass Monkey in Finnieston yet? Worth a visit.

I've got a review of it up on my blog.

Cheers.

I just read this HH. Got married in the Sherbrooke. Both families said it was the best meal they had at wedding. My wifes family still reguarlly use the the hotel for various social family gatherings.
Thank you. And why not.

Newby here,

Great blog site, esp the write up on Granny`s, my local. Showed it to the manageress and she was flattered.

Cheers, Bilko. Glad you like the blog.

Intending to do a few more pieces on the locals of Scotstoun, Knightswood, Yoker. And other areas that rarely get mentioned.

Have only just looked at this thread today for the first time.

My parents had their wedding reception in Sherbrooke Castle Hotel and my cousin in Renfrewshire had a reception for her daughter there.

Maybe one day I will get to see inside it.
