Looking for a quiet, safe venue

Postby BrigitDoon » Mon Jun 15, 2009 8:31 am

Hey dudes and dudesses...

I met with a friend the other evening. She's a cross-dresser. We went for a drink or two in the bar at Central Station, figuring that it wouldn't be too busy and she didn't have far to go to catch her train. :)

Still, they had music pouring out of the ceiling which made it difficult to hear what she was saying. I wasn't exactly amused at £4 for a bottle of Bulmer's Perry either. We had a good evening in spite of this but I think we might have done better.

On Friday, I picked up a transgirl at Queen's Street Station and escorted her to the gender clinic for her appointment. We met two more girls and went for a drink in the bar next to the station on the way back. Same problem: loud music and I couldn't hear what people were saying.

It was fortunate that on both occasions, the girls really look like girls, but I can see trouble if one's struggling with her appearance.

What I'm looking for, then, is a safe pub that is quiet. Either no music or music played very quietly. The licensee must be tolerant of women who are still legally male and won't complain when they use the ladies.

Gay pubs aren't necessarily the best places as there is an element within the gay community that resents the inclusion of 'T' in LGBT. I think the girls would prefer a place that does not have any particular theme, just a down-to-earth ordinary pub.

Not sure about pubs where the licensee is happy about toilet arrangements, are there specific LGBT forums who might help with that? Otherwise I quite like Pivo Pivo for quietness (generally), Mono (although their live music can get a bit loud) but it's usually peaceful otherwise. Waxy's is ok in the afternoon, usually quiet upstairs with nooks and crannies to sit in - and quiet toilets ;)

Thanks My Kitten.

I'll check out your recommendations.

I have membership of LGBT forums, but they're a niche interest. They're often full of squabbling "kids", grown-ups who should know better. What I'm really looking for is somewhere to go that has a wider-world clientèle, where shy girls can learn to be not so shy and build confidence. It's what's known as the real life test (RLT), a requisite for transition for those under supervision of a gender clinic.

I'm not dealing with lads who like to dress up for a laugh.

EK's my turf. I don't venture into town much. There's a bus stop on my doorstep and I can be in Stockwell Street in 40 minutes.

Knickers are a hoot when you're trying to get your knackers in them. M&S sell the most tolerant ones. Try their midis (let's face it, it's not for a friend, is it?)

Watch out if you're doing hormones. They make your tallywhackers shrink, but your arse pads out. The shrinkage isn't enough to compensate and presently you'll find your scruddies scrunching your wee bits. Time for girly knickers at that point; no use buying a larger man's size; you're arse will go straight through them (well mine did anyway...)

Happy shopping! :D

Good answer. Only kidding, of course.

Good luck finding a boozer. Have you thought about what used to be the Brunswick Cellars on Sauchiehall Street. I dunno what it might be called now but I remember it had plenty of alcoves and couches once you went up and away from the bar.

Hi BrigitDoon

Do you just need a pub that you and your buddies can have a few ciders that has a toilet anyone can use, without fear of any serious reprisal from anybodies legal standing :?:

That's about the long and the short of it, Dave.

We're just girls who want to sit and talk with some refreshment and not have to put up with knuckledragging attitudes from management and clientèle. Some of my girls are ex-military and not for messing with, but most wouldn't know how to subdue a drunken navvy. (My dad used to keep Bridgwater lads on his building site...)

Anyway, thanks for all the advice. Sauchiehall Street is a good idea because it's half way from the gender clinic to either of the stations.

CCA Sauchiehall Street. Couple of bars and good restaurant. Frequented by art school folks, writers, perfomance artists etc. etc.
Be surprised if there were any problems there.

which rules out CCA and The Arches bars.
"I before E, except after C" works in most cases but there are exceptions.
