A Library with a Bar!

Postby Field Marshall Shug » Sun Jun 17, 2007 12:32 pm

I was in my beloved Mitchell Library on Friday for the first time since it was renovated, hoping to get some lunch in the dark cafe which they have. But what I found was a sort-of airport departure lounge complete with trendy bar. It was busy so I reckon it's a good thing. Having a beer in a library was so weird and it's great you don't have to check your bags in now as this would have really made it feel like an airport.

Perhaps a packed lunch movement could be started...and people could start sneaking in bottles of vodka too.

Yes, but it is really crap as a library, which is what I think it is still supposed to be?

The noise and cooking smells from the cafe area (i.e. the busy corridor) right next to the book and reading area means that the scope for normal folks to do any worthwhile reading are almost nil . Just to add to the omnipresent background noise, the overheating in some parts of the reading area means that you can find yourself sitting next to a whirring electric-fan-on-a-stand.

Then there is the curious arrangement of having no provision for those who actually like a chair at a desk or table in a library so that they can take notes while reading things like text or reference books. Trying to do so while propping up your books on the soft cushy seats may be a trendy pose but it just aint practicable.... and anyway some of those soft cushy seats look a bit wanting on the cleanliness side.

Seems that the luxury of a seat with a desk has been denied to the art of reading and note-taking, and devoted entirely (and lavishly) to the large numbers of 'visitors' who hog the PC screens for the free internet access.

hehe sorry Escotty, I have to disagree with you on this one though - there's no shortage of quiet spaces in the Mitchell for reading and general contemplation :)

OK I'm not gonna fight you over this - but there is no seating with desks in the reading area where normal library goers like me want them, so there!... see you, you could start a fight if you were your own in an empty library (with or without tables)
