Restaurant up a close in Whiteinch?...

Postby MadameZiggy » Wed Apr 26, 2006 9:32 am

...I've heard about this place from my sister & friends, does it exist or is it an urban myth?

Apparently,or so I was told, there is a wee wummin that cooks amazing meals for the public & they are served in her living-room complete with telly, fireplace, etc.
Part of the deal is that it's a set price & set meal-no options like "no salt" or "hold the mayo",just a bit like when your granny cooked for you & you ate what you were given.
Also, after the meal is finished she kicks of her slippers & makes you listen to her do karaoke!

I've also heard that it is a favourite for hen parties, etc & that she is booked out months in advance.

Anyone else heard of this or am I having my leg pulled?! :?

My Aunt & Uncle did exactly the same thing in the 60's. I think their place was in Possilpark, or Springburn.

Sounds a bit like 'The Cabin'.

I've been there though there was no Wilma (she was ill, apparently) but it definitely had that ambience you mentioned. Food was pretty good too.

Live in Whiteinch for 8 years now and never heard of this. Think it may the the place ronson says. Apparently it's like eating in someone's front room.

It's a couple of stories put together.

Originally The Cabin in Whiteinch was run by an elderly mother and her daughter. They lived in the flat above The Cabin. They made pretty good home made food and sold it at a reasonable prices. We used to pop in with the kids occasionally for a plate of soup, and mince and potatoes. Great food washed down by Irn Bru, and really cheap. Whiteinch is home to many elderly people. The highest concentration of men (over 65 so don't get too excited gals) in Glasgow is to be found in the whiteinch ward so it was a regular port of call form men who could not cook. One woman regular was some unfortunate whom the restaurateurs fed for a token 5p or something.

They retired and sold the place to Denis and Mark (I think) who did the place up a bit but kept the homely atmosphere. We used to encounter them on the 62 coming back from Safeway in Partick with a couple of bags of ingredients for that night's meals. The place got popular on Sunday afternoons for the big three course meals that yer maw used to make. Soup Steak pie, mashed potato and peas (steeped the night before) and a dessert. With bread and tea. Then the West End trendies found it and thought they had died and gone to heaven. Wilma was hired as a waitress and equipped with a toy plastic microphone she entertained the diners with a selection of tunes.

I used to see Denis in The Stella Maris after his shift on the cooker but we had stopped going to the Cabin by then. I've been into their new places Roastit' Bubbly Jocks and the Cafe in Anderston whose name I forget.

Well the Cabin is still there. Not sure who runs it tho but it would not surprise me if it was Mo he has his fingers in a lot of pies. Mo used to deliver soup to borders cafe years back still see him hovering about in Scotstoun now and again.

Wilma leading the singing at the Cabin can be seen in this clip, amongst some other nonsense.

Favourite eatery in days gone by for the dealy departed Rex Lyons. He invited me to co me along one night for the singing and the fact his 'crew' got thne table for the whole evening.

I heard he was looking for crew for nigerian supply vessels at the same time and made an aunty's funeral excuse, in order to avoid waking up several says later on said vessel
