Chimmy Chungas ?

Postby StevenJ » Sun Feb 05, 2006 9:49 pm

Years ago (1996), I met someone who was studdying at Glasgow Uni. I came up to Glasgow to visit, and we went to a pub called, or I think was called "Chimmy Chungas". I recall it being near Kelvinbridge UG station, just on the other side of GW RD, and a little up towards Byres RD.

Now, by pure chance - my G/F lives in Glasgow, and we often go to the West End - however - I tried finding this pub, but can't. I know that the pub clearly isn't called Chimmy Chungas now (if it was that) but what is the building/put called now?

It was also Bar Oz for a while and has recently reinvented itself again, its on the corner of Bank Street and Great Western Road, opposite Clatty's (The Viper as it is now, but will be forever Clatty's)

O, thanks for that. I know the place.

I was sure it was on the other side of the road, but that does make sence - I seem to remember an upstairs in "chimmy Chungas" and that ties in with Bar OZ and the place as it is no, the name escape me to.....

Seems ok in there now, if you like that kind of place..........

Spot on Simba.

Chimmy Chungas inserted a floor , I think Bar Oz altered it a wee bit and Coopers have stripped it back again.

Check half way down the page for a wee history and a few remarks from the would be architect

and from the West End web site

Coopers .... named after the Coopers supermarket that was once there and that had "Coopers" in shiny brass on the front step. My gran used to live a few doors up from there so I knew it quite well.

The new incarnation isn't bad and the food is quite good.

Don't know if it's still there on the steps, but it's certainly still on Bank Street.

Believe it or not I remember Coopers even before it became a supermarket, when it was a large grocery store in the days before self-service came on the scene. This was in the nineteen-fifties when I was a wee boy living just across the road in Belmont Street. My mother used to go there. They had a big red machine that ground coffee beans. To this day I can still remember the wonderful smell it released when it was grinding away. Coopers were eventually taken over by a company called Fine Fare, also now defunct I think. Another shop my mother used to frequent was Belmont Valet Services which still exists as Belmont Dry Cleaners and so is almost certainly the oldest retail business in the area.

Chimmy Chungas was owned by Carnegies Leisure Group... the company joiner has his workshop round the back.

But when they were hitting hard times, they sold it along with the 3 carnegies bars in Glasgow and a few other of the units.

This was after they burned down Peggy Sues

I take they was an unknown set of vandals in no way related to the owners.
