Apparently they have scraped the money together from somewhere to finish it. Not before time. Will be interesting to see what route they take it - it has to dodge the Anderston Centre presumably to meet up with the "new Bridge to Nowhere" that used to lead into the Albany Hotel.

I'm sure I read that the money came from Sustrans. The delay is supposedly because the funding specifies the finished Bridge to Nowhere must be accessible to wheelchair users and the current 'up' slope is too steep even for power chairs.

The route east of the completed bridge will cross the Marriott (?) Hotel car park and join Waterloo Street before finishing at Central Station.

City's Bridge to Nowhere is finally set to go somewhere.

WORK began today on completing Glasgow's 'Bridge to Nowhere', which has been left high and dry for 40 years.

The bridge, built over the M8 in the 1970s, was intended to link Anderston to the city centre but was not finished by the developer and ends in mid air over the Mariott Hotel car park.

The £1.3 million completion of the bridge will link from Kelvingrove Park to Central Station, creating a new route for pedestrians and cyclists.

It will tie in to the west end of Waterloo Street, opposite Pitt Street, where a new pedestrian crossing will be installed.

A bit more info

Connect 2 Phase 2 Waterloo St, Claremont St and North Claremont Street.

Glasgow City Council will shortly begin cycle infrastructure enhancements along the length of Waterloo St from Hope St to Pitt St, at the junction of Berkeley St / Claremont St and also the relocation of the existing Mail box at the corner of Sauchiehall St / North Claremont St.

Waterloo St

The main changes which have been approved following statutory consultation are as follows;

• Introduction of a segregated two way cycle facility along the length of the north kerbline of Waterloo St from Hope Street to Pitt Street..

• Introduction of a TOUCAN crossing on Waterloo St near Pitt Street to link with the ongoing “Bridge to Nowhere” contract of the Connect2 project.

• Introduction of a TOUCAN crossing facility at its junction with Douglas St.

• Localised resurfacing of sections of the carriageway.

• Upgrading of the traffic signals along the length of Waterloo St to allow for the inclusion of the 2 way cycle facility into the existing junctions.

• Removal of parking places along the north carriageway of Waterloo St. Addition of parking places on Douglas St.

• Extension of the south footway on Waterloo St from Douglas St to the new TOUCAN crossing location near Pitt St to link to the final location of the “Bridge to Nowhere “ extension.

• Installation of new traffic signals at Blythswood St / Waterloo St junction.

Claremont St

The main changes which have been approved following statutory consultation are as follows;

• Upgrade / extension of the existing junction table to reduce car speed, improve crossing facility and raise vehicle / cycle awareness of cycle / vehicle interaction.

North Claremont St

• Relocation of the existing Royal Mail box to kerb side and refurbishment of the existing cycle facility.

Newlay Civil Engineering, 55 Clencraig Industrial Estate, Airdrie, ML6 9AS Tel 01236 769 919, (Contact John Paterson) have been appointed to undertake these works and currently intend to start on site week commencing Monday 10th September 2012, the duration of the whole of the works being approximately 12 weeks.

In December 2007 Sustrans’ Connect2 cycling programme won a £50 million grant from the BIG Lottery Fund for 79 UK-wide walking and cycling routes. Glasgow’s ambitious project will lead to the completion of that initial vision for the “Bridge to Nowhere” to link across the M8. By Spring 2013 this new route will link to the city centre via Waterloo St. providing a much needed link city centre for cyclists and pedestrians.

Portrait Bench

An important part of the project is the Portrait Bench. This basic wooden bench is surrounded by three life-size figures cut from Corten steel, the same material used for the famous Angel of the North near Gateshead, Tyne and Weir.

Gradually, they will weather and become a natural part of the landscape.
The final characters are chosen by you, based on the contribution they have made to local life, culture or history. Twelve have been suggested to help you vote for the final 3 figures to surround the bench. Including any alternative suggestions you can nominate a maximum of three characters.

Nominees

Alasdair Gray - Scottish writer and artist
Billy Connolly - Comedian and actor
Tom Weir - author, broadcaster and climber
Jim Watt - Boxer, sports commentator
Rikki Fulton - comic actor
Sir Thomas Lipton - creator of the Lipton tea brand
Jimmy Reid - Activist, Politician, Journalist
Margo MacDonald - politician, socialist, columnist
James Watt - Inventor, engineer
Marion Gilchrist – First woman to gain medical degree
Lulu - Singer
John Craig – Anderston community activist

Not that spooky mate. That's the wrong bridge picture you have posted. The bridge discussed is the other one down near Anderston Train Station I believe.
Unless of course you are highlighting Charing X without that salmon pink building on the other "road to nowhere" perhaps.
