Hi, firstly can i say that this site is great - fascinating reading!

im wondering if anyone has any info on this building (my house!)-

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=g3+8qb&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=36.999937,67.148438&ie=UTF8&ll=55.868389,-4.303336&spn=0.006405,0.024569&t=h&z=16&iwloc=A

It is a converted mill, which sits on the Kelvin next to Benalder St brigde, im looking to find out its previous uses, and any plans/images of the time when it was a working mill.

thanks!

The building you are in is in fact Victorian, but only just. Queen Victoria was crowned in 1837 and the Bishop Mill was completed in 1839. It was built for a Mr. William Wilson. Originally there would have been a wheel and a mill lade, long since gone, although you may well still be able to see signs of them.

The use of this site for milling goes back to medieval times. The archbishops of Glasgow had a summer residence in the area. The archbishopric also had a monopoly on milling rights and would have owned and operated the mill which stood there. Obviously those rights disappeared after the Reformation but the name "Bishop Mill" has remained through the centuries.

The Scottish Screen Archive has a 1978 film about the mill available, should be interesting if you now live in it! :D
