There was a talk about Glasgow's stonework and the general state of (dis)repair during the Doors Open events a few years ago and the gist was that there isn't too much of a problem getting materials if you're prepared to pay, that money could/ might be found (OK, this isn't today we're talking) but that the real problem is a shortage of skilled masons.

I have an book from 92. Glasgow Archaeological Journal, Excavations at Glasgow Cathedral by Stephen T. Driscoll.
Very interesting. Need to visit the Cathedral again with this book. I also have a book called "The Ghosts of Glasgow" guides you around the tombs in and outside the Cathedral.

The big whales jawbone arch at the Peoples Palace was apparently dug up in what was the garden of the adjoining castle. I read somewhere that the stones from what remained of the castle were used in building the barracks in the Gallowgate. The wall of the barracks still largely exists, Barrack Street etc'.

Don't waste your time folks, looking for the Barrack's walls, they've just been razed to the ground to clear the site ror a new supermarket. Anotherchunk of old Glasgow bites the dust!

Not quite down to the ground, they've been lowered to about four feet and topped with copes.

The ladybird is on the underside of the canopy of the RNVR chair and " recalls a patrol in 1943 by a motor torpedo boat commanded by Cmdr Alastair Montgomerie, between Great Yarmouth and Holland. A ladybird alighted on their charts but, feeling that to kill it would bring them bad luck , they spared its life. Later on that patrol ----- in a clash with enemy armed trawlers their petrol tanks were set on fire. However, they returned to base safely.’ "

Primitive spectacles have been around for a very long time. One source suggests "The oldest spectacles, known to us from a painting by di Modena in 1352, consisted of two lenses in rims, joined centrally. "

That an image of someone wearing spectacles turns up in stained glass in a building commenced in that era shouldn't be that surprising.
