Pollphail Village - Portavadie

Postby Bing Buzby » Tue Jun 30, 2009 1:17 pm

Anybody interested in a final rummage through this 1970's 'ghost village' before it gets knocked down?

I was there a few years ago, well worth a visit. Only lightly vandalised despite 30 years abandonment due to it's remoteness. If you go from Gourock to Dunoon, afterwards you can get the ferry across to Tarbet and make a round trip of it.

Excellent, BB, thanks for that. Is it reachable by foot (i.e. not going by car)?

The rest is standard transportation

Thanks Dave

I am probably the last person to ask about public transport.

Well, if you plan to go by public transport looks like you might want to think about being a Central by 6am. It'll be a long day so perhaps contact the various transport companies to explain your intentions, I doubt you'll bring the islands to a crashing halt by being 10 minutes late.

EDIT: Suppose I should announce I am a car owner and I would have 3 available seats should a road tour be called for. You'd need to contribute for fuel and put up with my wean. That's it

A was there last weeekend, its pretty grim.

Its far from a village, its not houses as I expected, its all single bunk dorms.

Main building is still quite interesting with parts kitchen machinery and food serving areas still there.

The wash rooms still have the industrial washing machines and tumble driers that have never been used

The sheep and ram sh!t is quite horrendous though, 35 odd years of build up and it dont smell too good :)

All in all it was a cracking drive up, stunning weather and scenery and I wasnt disappointed with the place. The fact its soooo out the way I think has preserved it quite well from vandalism, theres actually a lot of unbroken windows and I was pleasantly suprised to find keys still in locks.

Thanks Fraz. Great pics BTW.

I don't know what I find more surprising; the fact it's been vandalised at all or that it hasn't been trashed completely?!

Keys still in locks after 30 years - amazing!

I never knew the place existed. I know I've passed by that way dozens of times too.

Theres still dozens of windows that have'nt been smashed, rooms that still have locked doors and the keys in the drawers facsinated me as well.....

A think the fact its sooooo remote has saved it.

As an Urban Explorer that wont smash things up or take things (Leave nothing but footprints or a message in dust and take nothing but pictures) I just hope the press doesnt attract unwanted attention.

I'll be posting some pictures i took a couple of weekends ago as soon as my internet is connected in my flat. I managed to forget my tripod though (gutted when i realised!) so didnt come away with as many good indoor pictures as i hoped.
I think i'll be heading back up sometime soon though.

On a note on there demolition, there are warning signs put up around the entrance stating that the buildings must not be vandalised due to the bats which live there. Does anyone know if they will just pull it all down anyways or do they have to get special permission or just do it when the bats aint looking?
