Hi all. I walked the High Street - Bridgeton Central branch line yesterday which was a branch line that ran from the west to the east of Glasgow to Bridgeton Central which was a big terminus station before closing in 1979 to passengers and to all traffic and use in 1987. The branch line consists of many tunnels and cuttings. The route was up until recently a waste tip for the locals and the tunnels were filled in with rubbish and rat infested. Luckily during my walk no rats were to be seen or heard but I saw 1 fox but that was before I was in the route premises so from start to finish I was myself and it was thoroughly enjoyable. The route is in very good condition with thanks to Glasgow City Council clearing up the waste tip the locals had turned the toute into. Excellent photos Jonno, what a place to go a walk

I am in awe of the Victorian engineers and builders who did alll this, probably in just a few years too it makes our present times pale when you consider how long it takes to get simple rail links built and running, the Crossrail Glasgow Airport fiascos come to mind.

I often wondered where that junction to nowhere at High Street Station went to. Surely there must be business for this route today? Doesn't look like it would take much work to re-open it?

Great pics. Where was Gallowgate Central Station?

Gallowgate Central was in the east end of Glasgow and was a station that served the St. Enoch / High Street - Bridgeton Central branch line. There was talks about reopening this line but plans got the knock back if my mind serves me correctly. I will check up within the next few days and get back to you on this. The branch is now in really good condition since Glasgow City Council went down and cleaned up what was a 'local dump' to the locals. It was that bad some of the tunnels were significantly filled at one / both ends. What I am trying to say is the line is in too good state for it not to be reopened but we shall all see!!!

11 Lambert Street, Glasgow

Cant locate 11 Lambert Street so im guessing its long gone. Could anyone say roughly where it was siuated?

Could the recently awarded games and their location in and around Parkhead not mean some of these lines are considered for re-opening? It would be nice to see.

Not wishing to douse the flames of the fine work here but do I recall the clean up effort for this line being documented on this very forum. Couldn't find it so it may have disappeared along with the disgruntled poster but it was here.

Jonathan, great pictures as usual. One of the most striking features for me is the quality of brickwork in the tunnel entrances. Look at the very first photo for example. The workmanship is just superb. It’s a great pity the tunnels can’t be properly cleaned to reveal the original red sandstone. This old line properly done up would make a great walkway and cycle path and would be terrific asset to the area.

Hi Quality Mince, I am sorry to you and the others fo rhte late reply. I really ned to start talking about the other threads on this fascinating forum but I just do not seem to have the time. I agree with what you are saying about opening the route as part of a cycle path but it would be a ned hangout like the current cycle paths in Glasgow and the rest (most of Scotland). I t would be good to see the line opened up if I am honest, though, I don't think it will happen.
