Yes PPM the cooncil need to cut the verges back a bit. I wonder if the milestone is now a decorative feature in some local's back garden?

I was mooching about the area a bit yesterday too. Beats cutting the lawn :)

Nobody has mentioned the Millerstone ::):

Oh' are they sword marks? :?

I'm wondering why somebody dumped that big dod of concrete there, it s recent [as in it wasn't there two years ago].

I think there's been a lot of fly tipping around the location of the stone. I noticed a gate now prevens parking and there's a sign stating that camera's are in place to catch people dumping rubbish. I think the concrete is to stop cars being able reverse in and dump rubbish?

What a find. You've opened this subject up with a bang Knightmare!

That letter is without a doubt genuine (Drumbowie farm is along the road a wee bit from the stone) and informative though I'm surprised Knox never mentioned Burns and the date of his visiting the stone. Burns taking the time to look at it is something I don't think is generally recorded.

I don't know about the Calagry Uni investigations but I assume they proved nothing as twenty years have passed and we haven't heard anything about it.

According to Elizabeth Russell her grandfather showed it to Burns in 1787 so the stone has been there for much longer than I reckoned (hauns up!) so it never fell off a railway wagon.

mmmm

Its_a_gamp wrote:I have a theory (and its just a theory) but at Rigend (sic) in 1864 there was a milestone marking the road from crlisle to stirling. Milestones were first used by the romans then reintroduced C1600. I know this is 300 years after Wallace, but, If there was a largish stone already in place when they were marking they would have carved this it rather than bring a stone. Has anyone seen the Riggend milestone that could tell if its large and uneven rather than purpose cut.(IYKWIM)

Just found this on the Douglas Campbell Show on Flickr and it reminded me if this thread....

Funny how things turn up eventually! Anyway, I take it this is not the Wallace Stone(?)
