13 year old boy harmed at St Peter's seminary

"The old seminary building is a ruin and very dangerous. We have had recent reports of youths going in but I am appealing to them - keep out. We will be stepping up patrols on the site."

Really nice to hear how one of the other groups of people that frequented St Peters are doing. It's a place that seems to attract such a variety of people for a wide range of reasons.

Is it still currently possible to visit St Peter's Seminary? I was wondering if the prospective redevelopment might mean the site has been closed off more thoroughly than before? Has anyone been recently? Thanks.

I'd like to know too. (I'm tempted to go soon on the off chance and find out one way or another...)

I'm at a loss as to how they did it, but it looks like some fucker's smashed the altar. There are some photos on Flickr... >example<

How *do* you break a lump of granite like that? In any case, it is a matter of some regret that one of those shoogly beams didn't come down on their big dumb head immediately afterwards, but you can't always get what you want.

There seems to have been a concerted effort to destroy it since around 2007 when the first noticeable lumps were smashed off it.

Has anyone else been to (or planning to go to) Hinterland, the NVA sound and light show at St Peter's? I was there last night, and I have to admit I found it quite difficult seeing the place inevitably covered in fences so you can only see certain parts now - they had completely restricted access to the main chapel part, so you had to stand behind a fence looking from the altar down into it (if you could see past the 3 or 4 rows of folk at the fence, which I couldn't). The altar itself was covered in scaffolding, possibly to do with the light show, I'm not sure. It was bizarre seeing bits of the place with new 'safe' flooring too. I'm told by my partner that the light show was very impressive - I just spent the visit in a state of upset at not being able to see much of the building! Of course, the NVA project is only just underway and I do understand why they need to start by just showing us views that are 'safe' to see - I just felt that the heart and soul of the place were hidden because there was no way to get properly inside or get that view from the chapel looking towards the altar.

I'm going at the end of the week (twice, oddly enough!).

Be a shame not to have such free access and loads of people when you usually got the place to yourself (or with a few other kindred spirits/graffiti artists/porn film makes!) but I guess it would have been an H&S/insurance nightmare without such restrictions.

Are they really stopping people from taking pics inside the buildings?

Yes, they are asking people not to take photos inside the building. At one part, though, folk did start taking photos - as you go round, you will be asked at one part to switch off the light you are carrying (everyone gets a light on the way in) - and I reckon folk felt they could take photos more discreetly when their lights were off, and no-one seemed to be challenging it. One tip I would give is when you are standing in front of the altar, behind the fence looking towards the main body of the chapel, even if it's full of folk, hang around til you get a look through the fence (I didn't, because I was convinced there would be a chance to go down into the main space and see it properly, but there isn't).

St. Peter's is being re-named Hinterland, apparently. I've now gone from having some reservations about the NVA project to gnashing my teeth about it :x
