Cheers gang. It's a right shame, especially when archivists can't be arsed rescuing documents.

travel news on ceefax under scotland states
A8 GLASGOW CITY-Morrison Street(one way) closed westbound due to serious fire at the old Co-operative building at Laidlaw street, in Glasgow,
Diversion in operation-as signed locally. Also affecting A8 Nelson Street(one way street) at A77 Commerce Street and A8 Paisley Road at M8
I thought the fire was extinguished andthe building inspected and declared unsafe the above gives the impression that its still on fire.
ps its now been moved to page 2 on travel news

Reported in the Weekend Evening Times (which annoyingly has no online content) that the whole lot needs to come down.

Shame that it can't be saved - no doubt another soulless block of flats of derivative architecture will go up in its place.

I heard a rumour that the end section will be saved. Probably wishful thinking.

OK, I'm no surveyor, but looking at the end section, the roof is intact and the windows aren't even broken, so I'm struggling to see how it's somehow beyond salvage, other than someone deciding it's not worth the time and effort to shore it up and demolish around it. I could maybe see how the party wall with the wrecked parts behind it might be heat damaged, but as ever with these things, the easiest option and a lack of willing seem to be winning the day...

I do believe the nail/head interface is alive and well.

Snaps from the flats car park yesterday (road still closed, even for peds). Difficult to get a pic of the western end (with the clock) because of the trees.

Obviously it would be completely inappropriate to wonder if the name of the demolition company was in any way relevant....

what a waste of a lovely building, like many others left empty to mysteriously catch fire :(
im sure the old bridgend mill site in dalry ayrshire which burned down in 1994 was demolished/cleared by burnfield demolition
then the new builds on another part of the same site were built by burnfield developments
probably just a coincidence

thanks Smartalex
the owners were quoted as being shocked it had happened,no doubt the building will be insured
if they cared that much they might have secured the 1st 2 floor's with shutters or bricks to stop this happening
from what i saw on the tv/internet the fire started in at least 2 different floors
it will be interesting to see how quickly the owners of the site redevelop it now

Driving past today on the M8 noticed that both Paisley Road and Morrison Street remained closed to traffic. Given that the structure never collapsed during Hurricane Bawbag - don't our city faithers think it's about time to open at least one of the roads?

After all, we're Glaswegians in the face of danger we just gie it a name and put it on Twitter...
