Came across a couple of tunnel shafts in the area of Keppochhill Road highlighted on this old map while browsing the route of the St Enoch Burn

Mineshafts, maybe? The MItchell has a map of old capped mineshafts - there's absolutely loads of them...

thanks Ben

I’m surprised this possibility hasn’t been explored by the more intrepid members already

Can you access the map online or do you have to make a personal request?

I don't think it's online - I went along in person and they were very helpful about digging out piles of maps. I was looking for tunnels and culverts, though, which weren't shown...

is the first one maybe a ventilation shaft for the railway tunnels into buchanan street?
second one would imply something else going on, i.e. steam engine pumping water, perhaps, with the shaft ventilating any tunnels underneath?
just going by other old maps i've seen, but if it's a mineshaft, it's usually called something like that.
'tunnel' shaft to me implies ventilation, maybe access for a 'horizontal' feature, like a tunnel/channel/drain etc.

The one near Balmore Road has a matching one the other side of Balmore Road, about at the intersections of the lines of Knapdale Street and Haywood Street. An 1894 map shows two decent-sized spoil heaps right next to the railway. Looks like a small coal mine.

Looking around some old maps I've layered onto Google Earth, there's also:

- An old level at the south-western end of the Western Necropolis - this had a "mineral railway" connecting it to the main line.
- An old shaft just west of Wellgrove St in Anniesland.
- An old shaft just south of Kilbride St, on a line with Logan St.
- An old shaft just north of the south end of Ashgill Road.
- A triangle of three more old shafts in Possil - one just north of Haywood St, east of Ashgill Pl., one directly south of that, just north of the dismantled railway, and one a bit east, just north of Possil Junction, the junction of the two dismantled railways.
- An old shaft just the other side of the canal from Firhill Park, in a south-easterly direction.
- An old shaft in the middle of nowhere, other side of the canal from Lochfauld Road.

I'm sure there are lots more - they're marked in several different ways on these maps, so are quite tricky to spot :)

I think these air shafts are vents from where the park burn is piped down into Lenzie Loch. I could be wrong, but I seem to remember there being another vent further north, on the other side of Boghead road.
