There’s three of these weird looking manhole covers on the footway with no visible holes for lifting gear - think you’d have to call in Geoff Capes

Any idea of depth?

Could these be the corporation tramway ducts? There was a duct network which ran parallel to many tram lines, containing power cables. When the trams were withdrawn, the ducts were sold to the SSEB (now Scottish power) for a pound. They then passed, I belive, to Scottish Power > Scottish Power Telecoms > scottish telecom > THUS, and are still used for comms cables.

Maybe they were for providing light, tather than access, to a basement or even (gasp!) a tunnel under the pavement?

Where and when is the map from, and do you know who wrote "corporation tunnel" on it?

This may be the tunnel that sparked the rumours in this thread on the forum. Extremely doubtful that it was built for that purpose though. :D

well had another nose around here this morning

there's actually four of the round covers on the footway

I suspect this could be the Hope Street entrance

you can see into the tunnel if you peer through the grill outside the Dragon Restaurant

I suspect this footway cover could be the tunnel entrance where it ends on Cowcaddens Road outside MacConnells Pub
