Does anyone know of any POW camps near the Glasgow area that are still worth visiting? Or any WW2 buildings structures worth having a look at.
I had the luck of visiting one near the town of Alyth when I was younger but it has since been demolished. I never got the chance to take any pics of it, but can tell you that there were numerous works of art drawn on the walls within. (street scenes and buildings.) I think they had been done with chalk. When I saw them the vandals had drawn some of their own additions on them. (Stick figures getting intimate with each other and the likes).
I have also visited another one in Fife (Annsmuir) which is in fantastic condition. Many of the original huts are still standing, have the original light switches inside and have toilets and urinals. There is also a Swastika drawn on a wall in one of them. (not sure if this is original though) Some of the huts have fire places at one end. I have not bothered to get any photos yet, but if anyone is interested then I will make an effort to post them.
Nearly forgot to mention that there is also a anti tank trench running around a section of this camp, and located in the woods (several hundred yards) is a pill box. I visited this the last time I was there, taking a torch, and was not dissapointed. The inside gives some indication of the conditions that our men would have to have fought in during an enemy occupation attempt. The small slit windows (similar to those built into castle walls), no light within, etc. The wooden boards at the firing points are still there and appear to have square holes cut into them. I'm not sure what for but assume that they would perhaps have stored amo in them for easy reach.
