Nah, it's UNIT HQ. If you see the Brigadier, tell him there's some giant maggots in Wales that need sorting out.

Now, where did I leave that Etheric Beam Locator.......

If you're driving about the Lenzie area, as i often do driving to see my other half, you can see these hatches in a lot of the fields which seem to let you into something - what I don't know, I couldn't get them open!!

When I photographed the entrance to Unit HQ as the good Dr says at Lenzie, I parked my car on the extremely steep hill on the other side of the road - word of warning - DON'T - it's a real *****r to get out of again.

Yeah, it's a door/stairway combination by the looks of things on all these structures. It's not terribly clear on the pics due to it being absolutely battering down with rain at the time I took the shots and I couldnt really hang about too much.

I know the hatches in the fields you mean. The run in line with these structures.

Also, I didnt photograph it at the time, but there's one of the high visibility aerial pipeline markers across the road from the Moodiesburn structure.

One of these kind of things (albeit without the number 4 on it IIRC):

While things may be a bit OT with regard the ROC content of the thread, it was probably the moodiesburn pipe structure (which I mistook for an ROC post) that got me interested in ROC type things in the first place :P

Someone once told me these were for detecting Gas during the war. They would turn a different colour if there was gas in the atmosphere.

How much of this is total bull?

(Still convinced you've discovered UNIT HQ. Was there any blokes in rubber monster outfits hagning around? Or a bloke with white hair driving a yellow vintage car?)

I'm a bit of a cold war historian, and among my many artifacts (ROC Teletalks, Plessey PDRM-82 etc) I have a full NBC suit and S10 gas mask. If you want Dr I'll lend them to you and you can go up to Unit HQ and pretend to be the Briggadeir if you want!

AFAIK the orange signe things are there so that it is possible to follow the route of a pipeline from a low-flying aircraft.

Could, of course be total bull. :?

I thought the signs were just to identify the pipeline so that you didn't dig through it or something.

I thought they were related to the fact that post boxes had their tops painted with gas-detecting paint, and things like these wee signs were for areas where there wasn't a post box or similar.

I'm probably drifting into the realms of fantasy here.

NBC suit? No thanks, I just need to wear a tweed suit and a long scarf, casually set off with a floppy wode-brimmed hat.

Jelly-baby, anyone?

That's probably the most likely (and therefore least interesting) reason.

Let's try and convince the world they're marker spots for alien invasion craft!

I'm having a bad day at work, it's to be expected I'll talk pish.....

I've always been amazed by the NBC suit...

1. By the time I get it on, I'd be dead.
2. When I have it on, I can't walk.
3. When I tried the gas mask, I couldn't breathe.

Personally, I'd just go for the Jack Daniels + x amount of straws idea mentioned in the nuclear siren thread.
