Should get the camera this weekend, so i'll probably be out snapping Sunday or Monday.
If you see someone getting knocked down while standing in the middle of Great Western Road trying to get a good shot of the Ekco Radios sign, that'll be me!

re: my idea to photograph what remains of old painted adverts on gable walls.

I'm hopefully getting a loan of a friends digital camera this week, so weather, and time, permitting, i'll be out photographing all the remains i can find.
I think i know where most of them are now. Will send you the results as soon as i have them.

How about the old style cage manual lifts <hoists> that used to be in a lot of buildings ..they always had some old grumpy guy who gave you a good moaning if you where only going up one floor ,you would think he was humphing you up the stairs the way they moaned about it. can remember some on Robertson st York st.st Enoch,In fact i think they where everywhere , is there still some of them on the go,with an old greetin faced moaner on board..

Scissor Gate Hoist

Postby Pgcc93 » Fri Mar 26, 2004 5:53 pm

You'll find the worlds first lift still in place in the Crystal Palace pub in Jamaica Street. Formerly known as the Gardner building. I clocked it recently on a night out. My mates were eyeing up the burds and I was eyeing up the hoist. How queer!

This pic is from the 1937 extension of the Meadowside granary. Classic design. Note that the gate is open and I just had to have a look down :D , there were open shafts covering the floorspace so it was no place for a wrong foot. The counter weights and lift had been long scrapped, even the winding gear in the roofspace above had gone. The shaft was over 100ft to the quayside.

Don't want to steal your thunder but Glasgow's first lift was installed in the Athaeneum Theatre in Buchannan St in 1891 and wasn't employed in Gardner's Warehouse of Jamica St until 1897 (coinciding with the availability of more power fromthe new Port Dundas power station) :D

What about the lift that takes you up to McIntyre's the jeweller on Argyle St. The one with the Herculean entrance! Thats still got the wee guy that moans at you for ruining his day coz u made him mive his hand from "stop" to "go"! ::):
here i go, it's coming for me through the trees

Ah, the Old Athaneum. I had a great time in there in 1993, doing SYT's summer festival.

I remember the building trembling whenever an underground train went past.

Closed now, of course. Worth doing a project on?

as far as I know it was sold by Scottish Youth Theatre because they were offered a couple of million to sell it. Which was a nice sum of money for them..

I remember my mate having to lead me by the hand through the basement because it was so dark. He knew his way round blindofld he'd been working there on and off for a few years.

Don't recall any flooding, but there may have been. I remember the bar was tiny!

Well, i was out today and hopefully i'll get it finished tomorrow. Unfortunately my friend didn't give me the cable to download the pictures from her camera to to my PC, so i'm going to have to wait until the end of the week before i can send them to you as she is away this week. However, hopefully it will be worth the wait.

Hi everyone,

I know of a cracking old lift (that is until you're forced to ride in the shoogly old bugger) at the Victoria Infimiary. I'll try to remember to take my camera the next time I have to go there. I could also probably get some pics of the old derelict geriatric unit there if anyone is interested?

I would like something about Crookston Castle in Pollok...

There is a part of the castle called 'The Pit', where-if you were naughty-you spent your time in there.

Anyhoo, a local historian thinks that there are escape tunnels running from the castle and they may still be intact...but where to?

:D
Don't dream it. Be it.

new projects

Postby jjboy72 » Thu Apr 22, 2004 8:55 pm

well hi all.
new here and feel at home already.
Not only was i born in glasgow but i love it.
I have been looking for some time and have to confess that i may make some of you cry (possibly)
I hapen to love the old hospital buidings around glasgow, my kids were born at rotten row after all.
My job gives me access to Garloch hospital (about to be converted to housing), Leverndale (in the act), Meanskirk (history). Clydeport buildings....etc..
I can arrange visits for small parties, i know it maight take the thrill factor out for some (security not chasing you) but it is special.

Anyway good site, i have found so many things i didnt knoe were so close.

jj.
