Yes - it allowed trains to run from Newton on to the Neilston line without blocking traffic using Cathcart southbound. I believe is was a freight link, but a complicated junction because of the coming together of four routes. It was simplified, and the additional bridge over Cathcart Road removed.

Anytime! For completeness, I should have added this removed bridge was of metal construction, had a large advert viewed by northbound traffic heading to Glasgow along Cathcart Road, and belonged to the Lanarkshire & Ayrshire Railway Company, who actually built the line, running as it did to Neilston, Lugton etc.

To keep on topic I'd love to say it had a couple of tunnels somewhere... but it didn't. :) I think Railscot has a route map and limited info if you search for Cathcart.

hello everyone, i am new to this board.

i heard a rumnor in my work that glasgow has a secret nuclear bunker so set about researching and have found this site. reasing about all these tunnels is fascinating me and i am impressed with the level of detail.

I like the theory of the green vents for the tunnels and the cameras watching them, perhaps its a coincidence but then again maybe not.

I have also been scouting about and found an article which shows a map with tunnels penned on. and saw there was one going from swan street to sighthill... and i found these pics.

and

what you think? anyone heard anything about this at all?

He's solved it. He's cracked the Bothwell Street tunnel conundrum. We may as well shut the site down now. What is there to live for.

You may already have seen this thread.

There was, and may even still be, a bunker for the use of senior officials, police, etc, in Glasgow. It never occurred to me at the time to ask where it was, but given the advance warning period, it can't be too far from the City Centre.

It's nearer Strathclyde House, The Mitchell and Pitt Street. Was there any major construction work going on there which could have disguise the building of a bomb shelter?

Who cared a toss about a diddy wee council running Housing , the clenny and the parks.

I dunno why folk would be cagey about this particular entrance, it's hardly sensitive information.

A quick search of this site or indeed googling the tunnel in question will lead you to here:
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&q=Argyle+St,+Glasgow,+Lanarkshire+G3,+United+Kingdom&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=17.287903,39.375&ie=UTF8&cd=5&geocode=Ff9gVAMdd8m-_w&split=0&ll=55.869641,-4.248426&spn=0.001999,0.006845&t=h&z=18

Nice pics btw Jonno :)
How far along the tunnel did yoru venture?

Hang on - those Google pics show the route of the main track that ran from Buchanan Railway Station to sighthill under the A803 and the BREL works. Not much of a mystery there.... the circular building is the vent and access to it, but I've never seen any activity there.
