The Nostalgia Postcard - Glasgow Series

Postby dimairt » Sun Dec 02, 2007 9:33 pm

I got this card from E-bay last week. There appears to be 25 cards in the set, presumably about Glasgow - let's see if we can collect the set.

Eddy

I'd quite forgotten about this thread until this card arrived via e-bay today. It's a cracker too, with lots of detail showing all the things usually to be found at Glasgow's old Crosses: public toilets, public phones and police box.
The caption on the back is about the young man "striding out towards the Govan shipyard .. on his first day's work as an apprentice."
I don't know the area particularly well, perhaps other HG-ers can fill in the detail.

Eddy

Cheers Eddy! I think that's Govan Road at Water Row.

The fountain and steps to the toilets are still there. Modern pictures of both in this thread:

The fountain is now sadly lacking its cherub:

n the background heading away is Greenhaugh Street which doesn't exist anymore. The fugly square looking building with the water tank on the roof is the subway depot offices & canteen (also housed the exit from Govan Cross subway station).

Nowadays the modern Govan station building sits approximately on the site.

Jeez that takes me right back. Yon lad might have been myself. Had forgotten just how busy Govan Cross was back then.

I remember being in the public toilet at Govan Cross many years ago(late 80's) and I was sure it had masonic decoration(eg eye, compass etc) yet the next time I was there in the 90's it was gone. Am I imagining things ?

As I couldn't open the links on my post of December 2nd, I've put them here. Hope the techno-babble hasn't confused anyone - apart from me that is. Where are the weans when you really need them?
By the way, does anyone know where this is? The card doesn't give a location, only that it is 1954.

Eddy

Govan and I'm sure it's been posted before so search and stop using [URL] when posting [IMaGes]

HH,
It's ok, Dexter is actually being helpful here. He's had to put up with my neo-luddite approach to new technology at work for years. In return, I check his written work and keep a supply of red pens at the ready.

Dimairt, the picture is of the private Fairfield train using the GCT tram lines on the Govan Rd. heading towards the entrance to the Fairfields' yard at Elder St.
