It's a bit of a shithole, and the stench of hops from nearby United Distillers
is overpowering at times. A couple of weeks ago they had actually shut off
and drained part of the Pinkston basis, but the other day when I passed
it it was full of stagnent canal water again.

Speirs Wharf and Pinkston Basin on the Forth & Clyde Canal have not been connected for 40 years. However, they are expected to be re-connected by late 2005 in a £5.6million project, creating a thriving canal quarter.

Technically speaking, they've been connected since the canal was first
built - the section between the basin and Spiers Wharf is piped.

i'd fancy a trip to the 'island' in the pinkston basin, but it seems fairly secured, short of swimming across.

I think when I said herons I meant cormorants.
But still worth a trip before it's prettified.
Bring lots of black and white electrons.

Probably cormorants, Ronnie. There's one habitually sits on the wee boat dock at Firhill Basin. I've seen quite a few up and down the canal... not to be confused with shags  which are similar in shape, but smaller.

That area was on my list for a thorough photography session, noticed it when up at Mickey Oates Motorcyle place. Need to get a move on!
