Had the morning free and I worked out how to load jpegs into my iRiver so I stuck a few old photos in and had a wee scoot about the south side.

What strikes me about these photos is that I can count about 50 vehicles in the 5 'present' pictures whereas the old pics are just people (and monkeys!)

Superb photos Schiehallion. Really interesting. Particularly like the old village look in the early Battlefield Monument photograph.

The modern comparison is horrendous. I think i read that a developer is after the land where the tyre garage sits.

In reference to another Thread, I notice the sign indicating the entrance to the "Gorbals Public Washing House" in ? Lane.

I can't make it out either, but it'd make sense if it said "on Bedford Lane", since the sign itself is on Main street, and there appears to be a wee stick-out sign over the entrance looking down the lane!

Very cool pics all of you - this is an excellent thread.

It should say Bedford Lane which is the name of this road running off what was then Main St and is now Gorbals St. You can make out "Main St" below the wash house sign.

That's the actual wash house on the right but it is separated from the building behind by a wee lane off to the right called Bedford Row. The wee man with his back to us is walking towards Bedford Row.

Where is this? Is it around Elizabeth Street / Middleton St where all the renovation work is going on just now?

How did you manage to take that picture without getting a hackney from Gordon St up your arse? I'm impressed.
