Brilliant stuff Glasgowken. Does anyone know why they did not go ahead with the relocation of the tower?

Superb stuff GK a real Hidden Glasgow find. I read somewhere in a book (or it may have been on here) that they had considered moving it. The images you have posted are fascinating.

Cheers, I got the full report off Ebay (bit too dear tbh :( ) but it's probably also in the Mitchell.
I'm not one for change but it actually looks quite good in that new position :D

One idea was to dismantle the steeple and move it across the road where the Mercat building is.

Carillions are hand operated. Like an organ. Only you have to really smack the hammers hard. It makes a tremedous clatter!

You can get some which are hand AND foot operated, depending on the number of bells involved. There was a programme on BBC4 not long ago which featured one which had foot pedals as well.

The wooden paddles used to play the carillion is called a clavier, incidentally. Really fascinating instrument, I had no idea there was one in the Tolbooth and I'd love to hear it played.

It's Carillon, btw. Carillion is a construction company.

Let that be a lesson to all you non pedants.

He has a point though, it is important to know these things, we owe it to history (when we can) to get it right.

This place is actually a bit of a rush. This place used to be one of the best places you want to be at. But now the traffic alone has made it one worst place where no one would want to be at.
