Thanks Jim

I thought they looked like old photos which hadn't been kept to well.

More views from the Tollbooth

Waiting for a bus or half an hour and then three come along at one time.

Alex, that one is gagging for a past present. Hope you don't mind me cropping it for a comparison..............waiting for a tram and then ten come along at one time.

I love how you see the barrel roof of St Enoch Station in the old one and the glass roof of the St Enoch Centre in the new one.

Thank you schiehallion you have completely made my day. And thanks to Alex for the original.

There is so much depth and meaning for me in seeing these two photographs together. I love to think of the two different photographers, separated by the decades, trudging up the stairs to take the photographs.

Not too much has changed, both photographs show a city street full of people engaged in pretty much the same sort of activities.

I need to go and have a lie down now.

Thanks.

Spot on John. That's exactly why I love old photos. Too often people think the past belongs to someone else somewhere else. The past is just like yesterday only a bit further away and is full of folk like us with the same issues as us.

Mind!
As if.
Anytime Schiehallion. Great work and happy to have been a part of this matching images of the past with the present. But you better put it in the Past Present thread before one of the Mods come down heavy on you.

Agree with everything you and JR have said about this and I know from Fos's post in Past Present also exemplifies those remarks. It is strange to think that two people separated by many decades stood almost on the same spot and took the same or similar photos.

Tolbooth Steeple needs £200K to repair cracks

GLASGOW'S historic Tolbooth Steeple is to undergo repair work after cracks were discovered in the structure.
The 126ft-high steeple - which in medieval times witnessed hangings of witches, thieves and murderers - stands in Glasgow Cross and was built in 1636.
A recent survey showed cracked lintels on the building's south face, as well as the need for masonry, guttering and lead repairs.
It is hoped the work - estimated to cost around £200,000 - will be completed by the end of the summer.

I always think it's just a matter of time before a heavy lorry smashes into it :(
It was never intended to stand alone.

A pity the High St couldn't have been re-routed slightly to the east and give the steeple more room, but now that new build has gone up that won't happen.

I think these have been shown before, they are from a 1915 report on the future of the Tollbooth steeple.
One idea was to dismantle the steeple and move it across the road where the Mercat building is.
